Top-Ranked Stanford Readies for Pac-10 Individual Championships

Stanford, Calif. - On the first day of women's singles action, seven of the top eight seeds advanced to the round of 32, while three of the Nos. 9-16 seeds were ousted in the first round and another one scratched from the tournament. Five Stanford players advanced to the second round, while Baylor, Duke, Northwestern, TCU, UCLA, USC and Vanderbilt are all sending two players on to the second round. The Round of 32 women's singles play begins tomorrow morning at 10 a.m.

Vanderbilt's Take Bertrand pulled the biggest upset of the day, knocking off fifth-seeded Zsuzsanna Fodor of California, 6-2, 6-3. The sophomore from Great Falls, Va., will take on Stanford sophomore Celia Durkin in the second round on Thursday.

Six of the tournaments top eight seeds advanced on straight sets, as only Georgia Tech's No. 2 seed Kristi Miller needed a third set to secure her place in the round of 32.

Two NCAA Singles Champions remain alive in the draw, as fourth-seeded and defending champion Zuzana Zemenova of Baylor advances, beating USC's Luana Magnani in today's opening round. Two-time champion Amber Liu, who is seeded eight this year posted a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Marianna Yuferova of Virginia Commonwealth to advance to tomorrow's second round. 2005 semifinalist Riza Zalameda of UCLA also advanced.

Also of note, Northwestern freshman Georgia Rose has now won 29 of her last 30. She will face seventh-seeded Alice Barnes of Stanford in the Round of 32.

The Riviera/ITA All-American Champion, Nicole Leimbach of TCU also advances - she captured the first national title of the season with the win in October.

Tomorrow will begin with men's and women's singles round of 32 and will continue with men's and women's doubles opening round matches.
