Senior KC Corkery advanced to the NCAA Quarterfinals after today's 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 win over Tulsa's Arnau Bruguess, the No. 7 seed in the tournament. Corkery will play Clement Reix of Clemson in tomorrow's quartfinal match at the Taube Tennis Center.
Corkery, ranked 25th in the country, came back to beat Bruguess after losing the first set 6-4. It was the second straight day Corkery beat a seeded player. He defeated Arnaud Lecloerec of Virginia Commonwealth, seeded 9-16, in yesterday's Round of 32.
Corkery is now 31-5 overall in 2006 and 4-0 in NCAA team and individual play this year. This is the furthest Corkery has advanced in the NCAA Singles Tournament in his career.
"Freshman year i was in the round of 16 and I kind of had higher aspirations since my freshman year, but this is the first time I've made it past that round," said Corkery.
"I'm just out here playing. It was remarkable today. I didn't really feel any nerves until maybe just right at the end. I feel like I can play with these guys. Going into the NCAAs having had tough matches against top-ranked players, that's where I feel like I belong. On any given day, all the players out here are really good and anyone can beat anyone."
"I'm a senior and I get to play at home," he said. "This is awesome that I'm able to finish out my career here at Stanford. I have a lot of great memories and I like the courts, so it's nice."
In other Cardinal men's tennis news, James Pade was chosen Second-Team Academic All-Pac-10 today while Corkery was an honorable mention Academic All-Pac-10 selection.
