STANFORD, Calif.- Sofia Holden's 6-1, 6-3 victory at No. 5 singles clinched a 4-0 shutout for No. 28 BYU over No. 41 Oregon on Friday afternoon in an NCAA Tournament first round match at the Taube Family Tennis Stadium.
BYU (22-6, 7-1 Mountain West) was one of the nation's hottest teams entering the postseason, having won 13 of its last 14 matches. The Cougars made it look easy again on Friday morning, thanks to a dominating effort in doubles and three quick straight-set singles victories.
The Cougars captured the doubles point with victories at the Nos. 2 and 3 spots of the lineup. BYU's team of Kristina Doerr and Sofia Holden cruised to an easy 8-2 triumph over Oregon's Carmen Seremata and Tina Snodgrass to clinch the doubles point.
Anastasia Surkova gave BYU a 2-0 edge when she downed Oregon's Dominika Dieskova 6-3, 6-1 in a battle at No. 1 singles. Surkova, ranked No. 82 nationally, improved to a team-best 22-5 in dual match action.
Dolly Chang and Holden followed with victories at the lower part of the lineup to secure the win. Chang breezed past Oregon's Snodgrass 6-2, 6-1 at No. 6 before Holden topped Anna Powaska 6-1, 6-3 at No. 5.
BYU advances to face the winner of this afternoon's match between host No. 1 Stanford and No. 58 Sacramento State. Saturday's match will begin at noon.
