The No. 3 LSU Tigers edged the Cal State Northridge Matadors today at Smith Family Stadium in Stanford, Calif.
Killian Roessner knocked an RBI double off the left center field wall and lifted the Tigers to a win in the first game of the Stanford Regional.
The Tigers took a 2-0 lead in the second inning on a long ball by designated player Quinlan Duhon. Vanessa Soto led off the inning with a walk, and Duhon's blast off the left field foul pole brought two runs around.
The Matadors mounted a comeback in the fifth inning. Megan Smith reached on an infield single to start the inning and, with one out, pinch hitter Alexandria Alvarado reached on an error by the LSU pitcher. A two-out double by Matador third baseman Kelly Zakosek, scored Smith and brought Cal State Northridge within one. Right fielder Jackie Duree then sent a chop single over the head of the Tiger first baseman and Alvarado came in to tie the game.
Back-to-back doubles in the sixth inning scored the game-winner for the Tigers. Leslie Klein doubled down the left line to start things off and Roessner doubled off the wall in left center to score the run and put LSU at a 3-2 advantage.
LSU advances to tomorrow's 12 p.m. game and will face the winner of tonight's Stanford-Fresno State game. Cal State Northridge will play an elimination game tomorrow at 3 p.m against tonight's Stanford-Fresno State loser.
