Sophomore All-America Matt Bruch will try and continue his late season surge as he begins play in the NCAA Singles tournament on Wednesday in Athens, GA. Bruch, who won five straight matches to win the Pac-10 singles championship for the second consecutive season, is currently ranked No. 58 nationally. He will play Erling Tveit of Mississippi in the Round of 64.
Bruch comes into the NCAA's playing his best tennis of the season. After struggling through an injury-plagued regular season, he came on at the Pac-10 Championships to win five straight matches - three over ranked opponents - to capture his second Pac-10 singles title.
Bruch's first round opponent is indeed a formidable one. Tveit is seeded 9-16 in the NCAA Tournament and is ranked No. 13 in the country. Bruch defeated Tveit 7-6, 7-6 at the 2006 National Indoors.
In doubles play, which begins on Thursday, Bruch and Blake Muller will face Nicolas Delgado and Pedro Graber of Virginia Tech. The Cardinal duo are 16-3 in 2007, currently ranked No. 13 nationally and the defending Pac-10 champions.
