STANFORD, Calif. - The No. 11 Stanford men's golf team was unable to overtake No. 2 Southern California Sunday, but went 11-under-par collectively in the final round to hold on to second place out of 17 teams at the U.S. Intercollegiate Invitational. The Cardinal shot a one-over-par total of 841 strokes in three rounds of play. Two Cardinal golfers finished in the top ten, as freshmen Sihwan Kim shot a four-under-par 66 to tie for second with a final score of 208, and Steve Ziegler shot a three-under-par 67 to tie for seventh place with three other golfers at 211.
Stanford, who finished yesterday's rounds 12-over-par, managed to whittle down the 26 stroke gap between it and the Trojans to 13 strokes with today's performance, but they were unable to best USC, which shot a 12-under-par 828 to capture the team title.
The Cardinal did much better today without the presence of the gusty winds that plagued rounds one and two. Just like in yesterday's first round, four of the five golfers achieved an even or under-par score, and one finished one-over-par. Junior Dodge Kemmer, senior Rob Grube, and sophomore Jordan Cox all finished in the top-20 on the leaderboard. Kemmer, in 16th, finished with four-over-par 214, while Grube and Cox tied each other for 20th, along with three other golfers, shooting a six-over-par 216.
Stanford and USC proved to be in a class by themselves at the U.S. Intercollegiate, as third place finishers California and No. 3 UCLA ended the tournament 17-over-par 857, and UC-Irvine took fifth place with a 21-over-par 861.
Stanford's next competition will be the Pac-10 Championships, beginning on April 28 in San Rafael, Calif.

STANFORD, Calif. - Hosting the 17-team U.S. Intercollegiate on its home course this weekend, the No. 11 Stanford men's golf team shot its way to second place in Saturday's action. The Cardinal got out to a fine start as four of its five team members turned in below or even-par rounds of golf at the Par-70 Stanford Golf Course.
Stanford shot a collective score of 572 (+12) over Saturday's two rounds, opening the day with a one-under 279. Dodge Kemmer led the way with a one-under 69 in the first round, while Jordan Cox, Sihwan Kim, and Steve Ziegler each carded an even-par 70. Rob Grube rounded things out with a 77.
Kim paced the Cardinal quintet overall Saturday, turning in rounds of 70 and 72 for a combined score of 142 (+2), good for a tie for sixth in the individual standings heading into Sunday's final round. Kemmer followed his first-round 69 with a 74 for a combined 143 (+3), tied for 10th overall and just one stroke back of Kim.
Battling gusty conditions in the afternoon round, the Cardinal got a score of 72 from Kim to lead the second round, while Grube rebounded to post a 73. Kemmer and Ziegler each shot a 74 for the round, and Cox carded a 76 to round things out.
In the team competition, Stanford sits 18 strokes back of fifth-ranked USC, which placed three golfers in the top four of the individual rankings. The Trojans, led by Rory Hie's 62-71-133 (-7) and Tom Glissmeyer's 66-73-139 (-1), carded a collective 266 (-14) in the first round to get out to the early lead.
UCLA's 284-290-574 (+14) has the Bruin's in third place, two strokes back of Stanford, in the team competition, while California (288-289-577) and UC Irvine (285-296-581) round out the top five.
Sunday's final round is set for a 7:30 a.m. shotgun start at Stanford Golf Course.
