STANFORD, Calif. - Stanford Head Coach John Tanner was named MPSF Co-Coach of the Year for the fifth time in his 11 seasons on The Farm, and freshman goalkeeper Amber Oland was named the conference's Newcomer of the Year, the MPSF announced Wednesday. Five Cardinal players, led by junior Lauren Silver's first-team selection, were also named to six spots on the various All-MPSF teams.

Along with Silver's first-team selection, Oland was named to both the All-MPSF Third Team and the All-Freshman Team. Jacquelyn Gauthier earned a third-team berth, while first-year players Allie Gerrity and Kim Krueger earned spots on the All-Freshman Team.

The Cardinal, the No. 2 seed in next weekend's 2008 National Collegiate Women's Water Polo Championship, currently own a 25-4 overall record, and exceeded the expectations of many around the conference by finishing MPSF play with an 11-1 mark, falling only to undefeated UCLA. Stanford will take on seventh-seeded Marist, the MAAC representative, in the tournament's opening contest at 1:30 p.m. next Friday, May 9.

Tanner, owner of a 269-47 (.851) career record through his 11th season at Stanford, led his team, which graduated or redshirted three of its top five scorers from last season as well as its two goalkeepers, to a 25-4 overall mark, an 11-1 MPSF record, and a third-place finish at last weekend's MPSF Tournament. Additionally, Tanner also guided the Cardinal to a third-place finish at the Stanford Invitational as well as a second-place effort at the UC Irvine Invitational in February. Previously named MPSF Coach of the Year in 1998, 2002, '03, and '07, Tanner shares this year's honor with UCLA head coach Adam Krikorian.

Oland, a freshman goalkeeper from Santa Ana, became Stanford's second player to capture Newcomer of the Year honors in the last three seasons, as Silver earned the same award in 2006. Starting from Day One in the Stanford cage, Oland has posted an impressive goals-against average of 5.19 over 26 games played, which has ranked in the conference's top three nearly all season. She also averages 8.23 saves per game, making 27 saves over three MPSF Tournament games last weekend en route to being the only freshman named to the All-Tournament Team.

Silver earned her third consecutive All-MPSF honor, and first first-team selection, Wednesday after leading the Cardinal in scoring with 66 goals and a 2.28 goals per game average. On the year, Silver leads the team with 11 hat tricks through the first 29 contests.

On the All-MPSF Third Team, Oland was joined by Gauthier, as the senior earned the first such honor of her career. Gauthier, whose versatility at the driver and two-meter positions has been invaluable to Stanford's 25 victories, is second on the team with six hat tricks through 29 games so far this season, and tied for second with 45 goals and 1.55 goals per game.

Freshmen Gerrity and Krueger combined with Oland to give Stanford three member of the All-Freshman team, the Cardinal's best showing since 2004, when it also landed three rookies on the team. Gerrity posted a hat trick and scored eight goals on the year for the Cardinal while Krueger posted a hat trick of her own to go with 16 goals.

UCLA seniors Jillian Kraus and Courtney Mathewson shared Co-Player of the Year honors after leading UCLA to an undefeated 30-0 record and MPSF regular season and tournament titles.
