STANFORD, Calif.- No. 17 Pepperdine defeated No. 40 California 4-1 on Friday afternoon in the opening round of the 2009 NCAA Men's Tennis Championship at the Taube Family Tennis Stadium.
The Waves (20-9, 5-0 WCC) advanced to Saturday's second round match at 3 p.m., where they will face the winner of Stanford/Sacramento State.
The Golden Bears conclude their season at 11-11 overall and 2-4 in Pac-10 play.
These two teams were hooking up for the second time this year, as Pepperdine edged California 4-3 in San Francisco back on Apr. 7.
Pepperdine quickly captured the doubles point to take a 1-0 lead, winning 8-5 at the No. 1 spot and 8-3 at the No. 2 position.
Omar Altmann and Mahmoud Kamel won matches at the Nos. 2 and 4 spots, respectively, stretching Pepperdine's lead to 3-0.
Thai Tu's 6-2, 6-1 triumph at the No. 5 position kept California alive at 3-1, but Alex Llompart topped Nick Andrews 6-4, 7-5 at No. 3 to secure the match.
