STANFORD, Calif. - Stanford senior opposite hitter Evan Romero was named Mountain Pacific Sports Federation co-Player of the Week for his performances in the Cardinal's weekend victories over No. 3 Pepperdine and No. 6 USC.
Romero put away a career-high 37 kills, including five in the decisive fifth set, to lead No. 1 Stanford to a 30-22, 30-25, 36-38, 26-30, 15-6 victory over Pepperdine. Romero followed with 13 kills in a 30-23, 30-24, 30-15 sweep over USC on Saturday.
Romero's previous high for kills was 34 against Ball State as a sophomore. The total also was one off the national season best of 38 by Long Beach State's Dean Bittner against UC Santa Barbara.
For the weekend, Romero had 50 kills in 90 attacks and only 12 errors, for a .422 hitting percentage. He also combined for 10 digs, four blocks and an ace in helping Stanford secure homecourt advantage for the first round of the MPSF Tournament and keeping the Cardinal on course for a conference title and No. 1 seed.
Romero shares the honor with UC Irvine's Carson Clark. This is Romero's first MPSF weekly award this year and the third of his collegiate career.
