Stanford senior Carly Janiga was named the Pac-10 Scholar-Athlete for women’s gymnastics and headlines a group of seven Cardinal gymnasts named to the conference All-Academic team.

Janiga, a senior psychology major and a six-time All-American, was selected for the award based on her performance in the gym and accomplishments in the classroom. Janiga, a psychology major, has a cumulative grade-point average of 3.79.

Janiga has been an all-around standout since her freshman year in 2007. Over the past week, she earned her fourth Pac-10 individual championship, capturing the floor exercise title and finishing second in the all-around, which she won in 2009. In addition, Janiga received her fourth All-Pac-10 first-team honor.

To be eligible for the award, the student-athlete must be a senior (in athletics eligibility) on track to receive a degree, have a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher, participate in at least 50 percent of the scheduled contests in the sport and have a minimum of one year in residence at the institution.

Each Pac-10 institution nominates one individual per sport, and the winners are selected by a committee of Pac-10 staff members at the conclusion of each sport's regular season. The athletic accomplishments of the nominees are a consideration in the voting for the award.

Janiga has made the Pac-10 All-Academic team for the third time and is joined on the first team by Tenaya West, who receives her first such honor. West previously was a two-time second team honoree.

Cardinal gymnasts on the second team are Danielle Ikoma, Allyse Ishino, and Blair Ryland. This is the first All-Academic team for Ikoma, second for Ishino and third for Ryland. Ishino was a second-team choice last year and Ryland has two honorable mentions.

Stanford also had two honorable mention choices: Shelley Alexander and Nicole Pechanec.
