STANFORD, Calif. - Bret Baumbach posted a 5-3 record at the ASICS U.S. Open Championships in the FILA Jr. Nationals Freestyle division at 66 KG (145.5 pounds) in Cleveland, Ohio to capture an eighth-place finish in the event.
As a placewinner, Baumbach has now qualified for the World Team Trials this summer. The Council Bluffs, Iowa native was 3-2 on the final day of competition. He recorded a 6-5, 2-2 decision over Mike Nevinger in his first match on Sunday. He then registered a fall in 1:20 over Colin Shober to remain alive in the bracket.
Baumbach then dropped his next two matches, both by falls, to claim eighth place.
Two other Cardinal wrestler's also completed competition on Sunday at the FILA Jr. Nationals. Timmy Boone dropped his opening match of the day at 70 KG (154.25 pounds), a 5-3, 5-1 decision to Paul Liguori, to end his day early.
Richard Kessler, wrestling at 96 KG (211.5 pounds), tallied a 1-2 record on the weekend. He won his first match Sunday, posting a 3-2, 3-2 decision against Mike McKeever. However, he was defeated by Navy's Chance Rauscher, 5-1, 3-0, eliminating him from the tournament.
Wrestling at 74 KG (163 pounds), Stanford's Meyer was 1-2 in the draw. He fell in a 3-0, 7-5 decision to Tyler Sheridan in his first match. He then defeated Navy's Jacob Shalles, 5-2, 1-3, 6-0, to advance, but he dropped a 2-1, 6-1 decision to Corey Leer to end his tournament.
