STANFORD, Calif.- Freshman Nicole Gibbs has been named the Pac-10 Women's Tennis Player of the Week for Apr. 11-17, as announced today by Commissioner Larry Scott.
The honor is the first of Gibbs' career and the third for a Stanford player this year, joining Hilary Barte (Feb. 28) and Mallory Burdette (Mar. 28).
Ranked No. 12 in the country, Gibbs won both of her dual matches last week at the No. 3 spot, helping Stanford improve to 23-0 overall. The Santa Monica, Calif., native defeated Anna Chkhikvishvilli of Saint Mary's, 6-1, 6-0 on Apr. 14, as the Cardinal extended its NCAA-record home winning streak to 179 overall.
Gibbs then provided the clincher with a win over California's Anett Schutting on Apr. 16, as Stanford captured its second straight Pac-10 championship. The Cardinal has won the Pac-10 title outright or claimed at least a share of the hardware in every season since 1987, with the exception of 2009.
Gibbs leads Stanford in victories, owning an overall record of 34-4 while compiling a 22-0 mark in duals.
After hosting the USTA Junior All-Star Team in an exhibition match Friday at 1:30 p.m., Stanford is idle until an appearance at the Pac-10 Championships later this month.
