STOCKTON, Calif. - The No. 10 Stanford softball team won its seventh straight game with a 6-1 decision at Pacific, Tuesday, at Bill Simoni Field in Stockton, Calif. The Cardinal is now 31-8 overall, while Pacific drops to 27-15.
Sophomore Teagan Gerhart improved to 17-6 in the circle with the win. She struck out eight batters in six innings of work. Pacific's Nikki Armagost took the loss, dropping to 13-9 on the year.
Stanford captured an early 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning. With runners on first and second and two outs, sophomore Jenna Rich reached on a fielder's choice, but a throwing error by Pacific shortstop Megan Allen allowed freshman Corey Hanewich to score. The inning continued with freshman Michelle Prong driving in two runs on a single to right field.
The Cardinal added two more runs in the second inning. Junior third baseman hit a solo home run off the first pitch she saw in her first at-bat. It marks the first home run of the season for Becerra. Gerhart also scored a run in the inning on a sacrifice fly to center field by Hanewich.
In the third, Rich led off and reached on a fielding error by Allen. Prong moved her to third with a double to left field. Rich then scored as Becerra grounded out to second base, giving the Cardinal a 6-0 lead in the game.
Pacific avoided the shutout in the fourth as second baseman Alexa Rivera hit an RBI single to left field.
Stanford continues Pac-10 play at rival California, Thursday-Saturday, Apr. 21-23 in Berkeley, Calif.
