TEMPE, Ariz. - Stanford's women's golf team finished fifth at the Pac-10 Women's Golf Championships in Tempe, Ariz. after the Cardinal shot a final round team score of 304 (+16) on Tuesday.
It marked Stanford's highest finish in the event since it placed second in 2001.
The Cardinal shot a team score of 884 (+20) for the three rounds, finishing 20 strokes behind first place USC (864; E). The Trojans finished five strokes clear of second place Arizona (869; +5) and nine shots ahead of third place UCLA (873; +9). Cal placed fourth at 880 (+16), four strokes ahead of Stanford.
USC's Sophia Popov won the individual title in a playoff over UCLA's Tiffany Lua. Both players finished at 210 (-6) for the tournament after matching final round scores of 70. Popov claimed the title on the first playoff hole with a par on the 18th hole.
Stanford's Sally Watson finished 12th after a closing round 76 left her at 219 (+3) for the event. Her round got off to a promising start with a birdie on the first hole, however, she played the next 14 holes six-over par, on her way to a final round 76.
Marissa Mar tied for 13th in her first Pac-10 Conference Championship event. After opening with a brilliant 69 on Sunday, Mar followed with rounds of 74 and 77 to finish at 220 (+4).
Kristina Wong tied for 19th at 223 after a final round 78.
Senior Rebecca Durham tied for 22nd at 225 (+9) after carding a final round 76.
Junior Lila Barton turned in Stanford's lowest round on Tuesday, carding a 75 (+3) on the Karsten Course. She finished tied for 33rd at 229 (+13) for the event.
Stanford will wait to hear its postseason fate as it eyes NCAA Regional competition, which begins on May 5 at a site to be determined.
