STANFORD, Calif. -
Men’s Gymnastics
Stanford used some strategy to overcome Illinois on the final rotation at the national championships and win the 100th NCAA team title in school history. The Cardinal entered its final event, the vault, trailing Illinois by four points. However, vault is the highest scoring event and Stanford, as the team prelims winner, got to choose its order of events. The Cardinal chose to conclude with the vault and stuck all six routines to cruise to a nearly two-point victory, 363.450-361.600 over runner-up Oklahoma in Columbus, Ohio. Alex Buscaglia had the highest vault score (16.350) in the team finals. National Finish: No. 1.
Baseball
Stanford was swept at Sunken Diamond by now No. 3-ranked Oregon State, dropping to 3-6 in the Pac-10 Conference and No. 26 nationally after ranking as high as No. 10 this season. Stanford has now dropped five straight Pac-10 games after a 3-1 start. Stanford hit just .200 last weekend against the Beavers, costing starting pitcher Mark Appel run support. Appel has dropped three one-run decisions to top-10 programs. The road does not get any easier as the Cardinal host No. 11 UCLA beginning Thursday, before traveling to No. 9 Arizona State the following weekend. Stanford's RPI remains high at No. 18 thanks to road series at top-25 foes, Rice, Vanderbilt and Texas. A highlight has been closer Chris Reed, who has a 1.26 ERA with four saves. Ranking: Unranked (Baseball America).
Men’s Golf
Stanford sophomore Andrew Yun has been named to the United States teams that will compete in the 2011 Palmer Cup, which is set for June 9-11 at The Stanwich Club outside of Greenwich, Conn. Ranking: No. 20 (Golfweek/Sagarin).
Women’s Golf
Stanford's Sally Watson finished 12th at the Pac-10 Championships in Tempe, Ariz., after a closing round 76 left her at 219 (+3) for the event. Her round got off to a promising start with a birdie on the first hole, however, she played the next 14 holes six-over par, on her way to a final round 76. Stanford finished fifth for its highest conference finish since placing second in 2001. Ranking: No. 28 (Golfweek/Sagarin).
Lacrosse
Leslie Foard and Lauren Schmidt were named to the Tewaaraton Award watch list. Originally, 100 women were named to the watch list, but recently the list was reduced to 24, which included both Foard and Schmidt. Stanford is one of just five schools with multiple members on the list. The 11th annual Tewaaraton Award will be presented on June 2 at the historic Warner Theatre in Washington, D.C. Ranking: No. 7 (IWLCA).
Men’s Rowing
Despite rowing without senior captain and U.S. under-23 team member Sebastian Peterlin because of a mild concussion sustained in a bike accident on campus Friday, the Stanford I Eight recorded a three-second win over Pac-10 opponent Oregon State Saturday at the Stanford Invitational before falling to Wisconsin on Sunday at Redwood Shores. Varsity 8 ranking: No. 10 (U.S. Rowing).
Women’s Rowing
Stanford completed a successful weekend at the Lake Natoma Invitational, topping the "A" Group's final points tally Sunday thanks in part to victories by the I and II Eights. Varsity NCAA ranking: No. 2 (U.S. Rowing); Lightweight Varsity 8 ranking: No. 2 (U.S. Rowing).
Sailing
Stanford will shoot for its second consecutive sweep of the Pacific Coast Conference, after earning a team championship last weekend at Redwood Shores. The Cardinal began the postseason with a coed victory two weeks ago in Santa Barbara and return for the women's championships. Stanford has won the last five PCCSC women's titles. Hannah Burroughs finished off her career as a four-time PCCSC team champion.
Sally Mace and Molly McKinney skippered the Cardinal to a third-place showing at the Coast Guard Academy this past weekend at the Wick Shrew Women’s Trophy event. Stanford came in ranked No. 12 prior to their finish on the Eastern shores. Coed ranking: No. 11 (Sailing World); Women's Ranking: No. 12 (Sailing World).
Softball
Stanford is on a seven-game winning streak, including five straight in the Pac-10 Conference. The Cardinal is led by junior shortstop Ashley Hansen whose .504 batting average ranks third nationally. Her 0.50 doubles per game rank first. The Chandler, Ariz., native has tallied 61 hits while drawing 20 walks and only striking out twice. The Cardinal travels across the Bay this weekend for a three-game series at rival California, beginning Thursday. Ranking: No. 10 (NFCA).
Men’s Tennis
Riding a season-best nine-match winning streak, No. 8 Stanford (17-5, 4-1 Pac-10) hosts No. 14 California (12-6, 3-2 Pac-10) on Saturday at 1 p.m. The Cardinal still has an outside shot of claiming a share of the conference title if UCLA can upset two-time defending champion USC on Friday afternoon. The match will also serve as Senior Day for Alex Clayton, Greg Hirshman and Ted Kelly. The senior tribute will take place following the doubles competition but before singles play begins. Ranking: No. 8 (ITA).
Women’s Tennis
Back at the No. 1 spot in the latest edition of the ITA rankings, Stanford (23-0, 8-0 Pac-10) already has closed out its regular season and captured the conference title. The Cardinal remains the only unbeaten team in Division I. So the Cardinal will take a break from dual match competition, and host the USTA junior national team in an exhibition match on Friday at 1:30 p.m. Stanford will face off against some of the top juniors in the country during the contest, with a likely format of four doubles matches and eight singles matches. Ranking: No. 1 (ITA).
Men’s Track and Field
Stanford swept the Big Meet from California at Cobb Track and Angell Field on Saturday. The men cruised to a 98-65 win, while the women’s meet was much closer, with Stanford holding off the Bears, 88-75. Elliott Heath starred for the men, winning both the 800 and 1,500 meters in come-from-behind fashion. Mark Mueller won the 200 and was a member of both winning relays. He capped the meet by coming from behind on the anchor leg of the 4 x 400 to put an exclamation point on Stanford’s team victory. Ranking: No. 8 (USTFCCCA).
Women’s Track and Field
The meet came down to the second-to-last event, the 3,000. Stanford needed a 1-2 finish to clinch the meet and got just that from Kate Niehaus and Stephanie Marcy. Niehaus ran away from the field early while Marcy waited and used a fierce kick to nearly catch her teammate. Ranking: No. 17 (USTFCCCA).
Men’s Volleyball
With Stanford’s victory over Pacific on Saturday, the Cardinal class of 2011 became the winningest class in program history, with a four-year record of 81-36 (.692). The class of Ian Connolly, Garrett Dobbs, Charley Henrikson, Jordan Inafuku, Max Halvorson, and Spencer McLachlin broke the mark of 80 victories held by the classes of 1997 (80-28) and 1995 (80-26). Ranking: No. 4 (AVCA).
Women’s Water Polo
Stanford clinched the No. 1 seed for the MPSF Tournament (April 30-May 1) and by doing so, set itself up for prime consideration for an NCAA at-large spot if the top-ranked Cardinal fails to win the conference tournament. Stanford earned the top seed by winning at No. 2 Cal on Saturday, 8-5. The victory extended Stanford’s winning streak in the series to 30. Stanford hasn’t lost to Cal since 2000. Ranking: No. 1 (CWPA).
