STANFORD, Calif. - The No. 12 Stanford softball team closed out is three-game series with No. 7 Arizona with a 2-0 loss, Sunday, in front of more than 1,000 fans at Smith Family Stadium. The Cardinal falls to 0-3 in the Pac-10 and 24-7 overall, while the Wildcats move to 3-0 in the conference and 32-6 overall.
Sophomore Teagan Gerhart registered her 15th complete game of the season, dropping to 13-6 overall. She struck out eight Wildcat hitters, while giving up five hits and just one earned run. Arizona sophomore Kenzie Fowler earned the win in the circle, moving to 20-4 on the season.
Junior center fielder Sarah Hassman registered Stanford's first hit of the game in the fourth inning, while freshman pinch hitter Jamie Millwood tallied the other hit for the Cardinal in the fifth
Both teams were scoreless through the first three innings before Arizona scored a run in the top of the fourth. Center fielder Lauren Schutzler reached on an error by Cardinal first baseman Alix Van Zandt to lead off the inning. She advanced to second as third baseman Brigette Del Ponte walked. The pair moved into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt by catcher Stacie Chambers. Schutzler then scored on an RBI single by right fielder Karissa Buchanan.
The Wildcats added another run in the sixth inning on a solo home run by Del Ponte to complete the scoring.
Up next, the Cardinal travels to Los Angeles for its first true road games of the season as it takes on the 2010 National Champion UCLA Bruins. Stanford and UCLA will play a three-game series, Friday-Sunday, Apr. 8-10 at Easton Stadium.
