STANFORD, Calif. -
Women’s Water Polo
Stanford earned the top seed at the NCAA tournament, Friday through Sunday at the University of Michigan. The Cardinal, which continued its streak as the only school to qualify for the tournament each year since its inception in 2001, will face Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference champion and No. 8 seed Iona, which earned its spot in the eight-team field with a 13-7 victory over Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference champion Redlands in a play-in game on May 7. Friday’s quarterfinal opener is set for a 3 p.m. PT start.
The Cardinal, featuring Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Player of the Year Annika Dries, will be competing for its second national championship, and has never finished lower than third nationally since the NCAA first sponsored a women’s water polo championship in 2001. This will be Stanford's next chance for NCAA title No. 101. Ranking: No. 1 (CWPA).
Baseball
Stanford see-sawed back into the rankings this week after its’ first sweep of the season, against Washington. Pac-10 Player of the Week Brian Ragira hit a robust .571 for the week and had four RBIs on Monday as the team picked up its season-long fifth-consecutive victory. The Cardinal is 9-9 in the Pac-10 (26-16 overall) and No. 25 nationally. Three weeks remain in the regular season and the NCAA regional fields will be announced on May 30. Stephen Piscotty leads the club with a .367 batting average, while Ragira has a team-best 37 RBIs. Ranking: No. 25 (Baseball America).
Men’s Basketball
Jeremy Green’s decision to enter the NBA Draft leaves Stanford with four seniors next season – G Jarrett Mann, F/C Josh Owens, C Jack Trotter, and F Andrew Zimmermann, and only five upperclassmen, including rising junior G Gabriel Harris. Owens becomes the leading returning scorer, averaging 11.6 last season. Owens and Mann were the only regular starters out of that group.
Women’s Basketball
Sisters Nnemkadi and Chiney Ogwumike accepted invitations to the USA Basketball World University Games Team Trials in Colorado Springs, Colo., from May 22-25. They will be training for a spot on the team that will compete at the 2011 World University Games from Aug. 14-21 in Shenzhen, China. For Nnemkadi, it would be a chance to earn a spot on the third USA Basketball team of her career, having earned gold medals with the U18 and U19 national teams. For Chiney, it would be her second USA Basketball selection. She won a gold medal with the U18 national team at the FIBA Americas Championship last summer.
Men’s Golf
Stanford received the No. 4 seed for the NCAA Indiana Region, which will be held May 19-21 at the Wolf Run Golf Club in Zionsville, Ind. The other teams are (in order of seeding) Alabama, Illinois, Iowa, Wake Forest, Tennessee, Indiana, Florida State, Michigan, Charlotte, Memphis, Wichita State, Missouri-Kansas City and Sacred Heart. The low five teams and the low individual not on those teams advance to the NCAA finals at Karsten Creek in Stillwater, Okla., May 31-June 5. Ranking: No. 21 (Golfweek/Sagarin).
Women’s Golf
Stanford finished seventh at the NCAA Central Regional at the Warren Course in South Bend, Ind., to earn a spot in the NCAA Championships at The Traditions Course in Bryan, Texas, May 18-21. Ranking: No. 28 (Golfweek/Sagarin).
Lacrosse
The Cardinal will be seeking its first NCAA tournament victory on Saturday at 10 a.m., PT, when it takes on Florida in the first round. Stanford is 0-2 all-time in the tournament, including last season’s heartbreaking 9-8 loss at James Madison, when the Cardinal led late in the second half. Stanford (16-2) had hoped for a top-8 seed and a home game to begin NCAA play, but instead will travel to Gainesville, Fla., to face the fourth-seeded Gators (15-3). Ranking: No. 7 (IWLCA).
Women’s Soccer
Former Stanford stars Nicole Barnhart (’04) and Rachel Buehler (’07) were named to the United States team that will play in the FIFA Women's World Cup in Germany June 26-July 17. But a third former Stanford star, Kelley O'Hara, was among the final cuts. Stanford is expected to be represented by five current or former players. Besides former stars Barnhart and Buehler for the U.S., Ali Riley (‘10) is the captain of the New Zealand team, and current junior Teresa Noyola and sophomore Alina Garciamendez are expected to be named to the Mexico squad.
Softball
Stanford (37-13; 9-9 Pac-10) closes out the Pac-10 season this weekend at top-ranked Arizona State. The Cardinal is in a tie for fourth place in the conference standings with three games remaining. Junior shortstop Ashley Hansen leads the Pac-10 in batting average (.497), slugging percentage (.804), on-base percentage (.562), hits (81) and doubles (23). Ranking: No. 11 (NFCA).
Tennis
Stanford’s men’s and women’s teams have homecourt advantage as long as they remain alive in the postseason, beginning this weekend with the NCAA first and second rounds. The Stanford men will be making their 33rd NCAA tournament appearance when the Cardinal (18-5) plays host to Army (13-11) on Friday at 2 p.m. The winner plays Cal Poly or Washington on Saturday at 3 p.m.
Making their 30th consecutive NCAA tournament appearance, the Stanford women (23-0) play Illinois-Chicago at noon on Saturday. The winner plays Long Beach State or Pepperdine on Sunday at noon.

One of the nation's finest tennis venues, the Taube Family Tennis Center is playing host to its second combined men's and women's NCAA Tennis Championships -- the tournament's current format was introduced at Stanford in 2006. In today's edition, we feature the dominant freshman duo of Kristie Ahn and Nicole Gibbs, each of whom is undefeated in dual-match play. Men's Ranking: No. 7 (ITA). Women's Ranking: No. 2 (ITA).
Men’s Track and Field
Stanford is looking for its first Pac-10 title since 2002 in Pullman. Wash. This weekend the No. 12 Cardinal travels to Tucson, Ariz., as conference’s second-highest ranked team, trailing only No. 10 Arizona. The Cardinal has threats to win several individual conference titles, including Elliott Heath, Chris Derrick and Jake Riley in the 5,000 and 10,000 meters, Amaechi Morton in the 400 hurdles, JT Sullivan in the 3,000 steeplechase, Jules Sharpe in the high jump and Geoffrey Tabor in the discus. Ranking: No. 12 (USTFCCCA).
Women’s Track and Field
Cardinal enters the Pac-10 Championships unranked after being No. 24 a week ago. No. 5 Oregon is the heavy favorite, but Stanford should be formidable as well. Katerina Stefanidi is the favorite in the pole vault, while Whitney Liehr (triple jump), Stephanie Marcy (5,000 meters), Kori Carter (100- and 400-meter hurdles), Carissa Levingston (200), Eda Karesin (javelin), and Justine Fedronic (800) all should be in the mix for big points.
Men’s Volleyball
Stanford finished with a final AVCA ranking of No. 7 following the NCAA championships that featured a surprising Ohio State title. The Buckeyes were led by setter Steven Kehoe, the brother of former Stanford women’s All-America setter Bryn Kehoe. Final Ranking: No. 7 (AVCA).
