INDIANAPOLIS - Stanford was well represented as the NCAA Division I Men's and Women's Track and Field Committee announced the participants in the 2011 NCAA Division I Men's and Women's Outdoor Track and Field Preliminary Championship Competition. The Preliminary Championship Competitions will be held May 26-28 with the West region hosted by Oregon in Eugene, Ore. The qualifiers from those regions will compete in the NCAA Championships held June 8-11 in Des Moines, Iowa.

The fields in Eugene will be made up of 48 athletes in the individual events and 24 teams in the relays. The goal will be to be one of the top 12 individuals or relays teams at the end of the weekend that will earn a trip to Des Moines for the NCAA championship rounds. The 12 from Eugene and the 12 from the other preliminary round site in Bloomington, Ind., will make up the 24 athlete and relay team fields that will compete at Drake Stadium for the a chance at the national title.

The Cardinal women are coming off a 14-place finish at last year's NCAA Championships and were fifth at the Pac-10 Championships this year. Stanford is led by Katerina Stefanidi, Whitney Liehr and Eda Karesin in the field events. Both Stefanidi and Liehr were All-Americans during indoor season, while Karesin was the Pac-10 champion in the javelin. Stefanidi was the NCAA runner-up during the indoor season and will be looking for her first national title in the pole vault. Liehr is ranked sixth in the triple jump and will also be competing in the long jump.

On the track, the notables include Kori Carter who ranks in the top-10 in both hurdles events and Stephanie Marcy who is coming off a Pac-10 title in the 10,000 meters and will run both the 5,000 and 10,000.

The men are led by the deep and talented distance crew that has six entries in both the 5,000 and 10,000 meters and three in the steeplechase. The big three of Elliott Heath, Chris Derrick and Jake Riley are all favorites to advance in both the 5,000 and 10,000 meters and eventually could contend for the national titles. JT Sullivan was fourth in the steeplechase at last year's NCAA meet and this year has been joined by Benjamin Johnson as top-10 steeplechasers in the country.

Other top hopes for the Stanford men are Amaechi Morton in the 400-meter hurdles and Geoffrey Tabor in the throws. Morton was third at last year's NCAA meet and should contend for his first NCAA title this year. Tabor broke through will a Pac-10 title in the discus this season and will compete both in that event and the shot put.
