Youngsters Dominate All-PCC Sailing Team

STANFORD, Calif.-- Four freshmen and one sophomore make up the All-Pacific Coast Collegiate Sailing Conference team for  Stanford, in a season that saw the Cardinal return to the national championships and sweep through the PCCSC this spring.

Eliza Richartz joins the all-conference team for the second consecutive year as an all-PCCSC women's skipper, joining freshmen Molly McKinney and Sally Mace on the women's side. The coed all-PCCSC skippers include freshmen Kevin Laube and Mateo Vargas.

Their young seasons will end in Oregon on the Hood River at the national championships starting on May 23.

Laube skippered 10 regattas this season, skippering the sixth place B division team at the Eastern Semifinals last weekend. He twice finished second at the Freshman Intersectional at Connecticut College and at won one of the North regional races.

Vargas skippered nine races throughout the year, culminating in the sixth place semifinal finish. He was also a part of the winning Connecticut freshman intersectional and the PCCSC coed championship team. He also skippered the Cardinal to second place finishes at the Captain Hurst Bowl in Dartmouth and the PCCSC Fall dingy championships.

Mace skippered 11 races in her first collegiate season, helping the Cardinal win the PCCSC women's championship in late April, the Bryson Women's race in Redwood Shores in October and the PCC Fall Championship in late October. She also won the PCCSC singlehanded championship. She also sailed the Cardinal to a third place at the Emily Wick women's race, a race dominated by top teams.

McKinney also skippered 11 races, finishing second to Mace at the singlehanded championships in the fall and sixth at nationals. She was also a skipper on the winning women's PCCSC team two weeks ago and a part of the third place Wick Regatta, skippering the B Division. She also won the South Regatta and the Fall PCCSC Championships.

Richartz' second season saw the sophomore skipper nine races with first place showings at the Bryson women's and South Regatta in March, as well as the conference women's championships.
