STANFORD, Calif. - Stanford men's water polo head coach John Vargas announced his four-man incoming freshman class Monday. Alex Bowen, Michael Carter, Robert Dunlevie and Clayton Evans will join the Cardinal this fall for the 2011 season.
The talented quartet will join a Cardinal squad that went 15-8 (5-3 MPSF) a year ago and reached the title game of the MPSF Championship.
Bowen, out of San Diego's Santana High School, is a two-time prep All-American, earning sixth-team honors in 2009 and first-team honors as a senior this past fall (2010). A three-time Grossmont North League Player of the Year and All-CIF selection (Division II from 2008-09, Division II in 2010), Bowen holds the CIF San Diego Section's career scoring record with 547 goals in his varsity prep career. He is also a two-time selection to the San Diego Union-Tribune All-Academic First Team.
He has also been active on the U.S. Youth and Junior National Teams since 2008, playing last summer for the U.S. Junior National Team at the Junior Pan-American Cup. At the Junior Olympic level, Bowen has been named an All-American six times (2004-05, 2007-10).
Carter, coming to Stanford from Lawrenceville (N.J.) School, has thrice been named to the Northeast Zone Youth/Junior Team (2008-10) and earned All-America honors at the 2010 USA Water Polo Junior Olympics. A native of South Africa before moving with his family to the United States in 2001, Carter served as the Big Red's water polo captain as a junior and senior, and was named to the Eastern Preps All-Tournament Team three times from 2008-10. In 2010, the Big Red went 22-8, finishing third at Easterns and first at the Garden State Tournament as Carter led the team with 100 goals. He was also named MVP of the 2009 Garden State Tournament.
Carter is also a standout on Lawrenceville School's swimming team, competing in 100 and 500-yard freestyle events, 100 fly and 200 IM individually, and anchoring the school's 200 and 400 relays. He earned All-America recognition for his swimming exploits following his junior and senior seasons.
A local talent out of Sacred Heart Preparatory, Dunlevie is a three-time CIF All-Central Coast Section Division II and All-West Catholic Athletic League selection. Dunlevie, a team captain for the Gators, led Sacred Heart Prep to a runner-up CCS Division II finish in 2010, as the Gators fell to Menlo School in the championship game. In 2008, at the club level, Dunlevie was named a USA Water Polo Junior Olympics All-American.
He also joins his sister, Vee Dunlevie, at Stanford. Vee is currently a member of the Cardinal women's water polo team.
A 2010 All-American goalie out of Los Angeles' Loyola High School, Evans is a two-time All-CIF Southern Section Division I selection, earning third-team honors in 2009 and first-team recognition as a senior in 2010. As two-year team captain at Loyola (2009-10), Evans was twice named the Mission League's Most Valuable Goalkeeper (2009-10) as well as second-team All-Mission League as a sophomore in 2008. While in the cage, he helped lead the Cubs to the CIF semifinal round in 2009 and 2010.
A three-time USA Water Polo Academic All-American, Evans, the 2010 Hawaiian Invitational MVP, was also part of the U.S. Youth National Team in 2009, and was named All-California-Hawaii in 2010.
