NCAA West Regionals First Round ![]()
STANFORD, Calif. -- - Senior Sydney Burlison shot a career-low round of 67 (-5) today to propel Stanford to the top of the leaderboard after the first round of the NCAA West Regionals beging held at the Colorado National Golf Club in Erie, Colo.
Stanford finished at 287 (-1) on Thursday and enjoy a one stroke lead over North Carolina, which shot a even par 288. Top-ranked UCLA is in third place at 290 (+2), followed by LSU (+3), Illinois (+8) and California (+8).
Colorado, Pepperdine and Tulsa are tied for seventh at 297 (+9).
The top eight teams advance to the NCAA Championships, which will be held later this month in Franklin, Tenn.
Burlison, who has been sidelined for much of the season with injury, blitzed the Colorado National layout with birdies on holes Nos. 6, 8, 10, 12, 13 and 17 before making her only bogey of the day on her final hole.
She has a two shot lead over Baylor's Haley Davis, who carded a 69, and a three stroke advantage over North Carolina's Catherine O'Donnell, who shot an opening round 70.
Seven players are tied for fourth at -1, including Sally Watson, who made four birdies on the back nine to finish with a 71. She was three-over on her round at the turn, but picked up birdies on holes 10, 13, 16 and 17 for her 71.
Freshman Mariko Tumangan turned in a hard-fought 73 and is ied for 18th place after the first 18 holes. Tumangan opened her round with a double bogey and was two-over at the turn. She got her round back to even par with late birdies on 16 and 17 but gave a stroke back with a bogey on the final hole.
Marissa Mar is tied for 54th after and opening round 76 while Kristina Wong is tied for 82nd after carding a 78 on Thursday.
The NCAA West Regionals will continue with second round action tomorrow at the Colorado National Golf Club.
Stanford will tee of at 7:30 am MT afrom hole No. 10 and will be paired with Denver and New Mexico State.
