ATHENS, Ga.- Three Stanford players have advanced to the round of 16 in singles, highlighting Thursday's second-round action at the 2012 NCAA Men's and Women's Singles Championships.
The Cardinal will also be well-represented in doubles, with one team remaining on both the men's and women's side.
In men's action, Bradley Klahn coasted past Fresno State's Remi Boutillier 6-1, 6-1 in his second round match. Klahn, 16-5 overall this year after missing the majority of the year due to injury, will next face Ohio State's Chase Buchanan on Friday at 7 a.m. PT.
Klahn is also competing in doubles with fellow senior Ryan Thacher, as the fourth-seeded duo defeated Notre Dame's Niall Fitzgerald and Casey Watt 6-4, 7-6 (2) in the opening round. Klahn and Thacher will now face Henrique Cunha and Chris Mengel on Friday at 1 p.m. PT.
For the women, Mallory Burdette and Nicole Gibbs advanced to the round of 16. Burdette was dominant for the second straight day, easily handling Washington's Denise Dy 6-1, 6-2. Dropping a set for the first time in 10 matches, Gibbs rallied for a 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 victory over Florida's Joanna Mather.
On Friday, Burdette will square off against USC's Sabrina Santamaria while Gibbs battles Tennessee's Natalie Pluskota. Both matches begin at 7 a.m. PT.
In doubles, Burdette and Gibbs took down Princeton's Hilary Bartlett and Lindsay Graff 6-1, 6-1 in their opener. Friday's match will be against Rice's Natalie Beazant and Dominique Harmath at 12:30 p.m. PT. Meanwhile, Stanford's No. 2 duo of Stacey Tan and Ellen Tsay dropped a 4-6, 7-5, 7-6 (5) decision to Notre Dame's Kristy Frilling and Shannon Mathews.
