PRIDE It is easy to take for granted Stanford’s unprecedented success in men’s and women’s tennis – 33 national team championships in 36 years, evenly distributed between our great men’s and women’s programs. This is truly an almost unbelievable achievement. However, much has gone into each title, and the competition continues to get better and better. We, as Stanford tennis fans and former players, should recognize the great job being done by Lele Forood and Frankie Brennan, and John Whitlinger and Brandon Coupe. Only a couple of untimely injuries separated our women’s team from a potential national championship this year. Our men’s team made great strides over a year ago, and, with a great recruiting class along with essentially the entire team returning, it will have a real chance at a championship run in 2009. We should take great pride in the caliber of young men and women in our programs, and we all look forward to an exceptional 2009. We sincerely Thank You for your continued interest and support. Go Card!! COACH-SHIP ENDOWMENTS We are actively soliciting gifts for endowing the Men’s Head Coaching Position and the Women’s Assistant Coaching Position. Each represents an investment of app. $1.5 million, which may be spread over five years. These, of course, are “named” endowments, such as the John L. Hinds Director of Tennis and the Peter and Helen Bing Director of Women’s Tennis. Kindly contact Director of Tennis, Dick Gould, for more information. PATRICK McENROE Patrick has had an incredible year which deserves to be recognized. First, he captained the first winning U.S. Davis Cup team in 12 years, which featured Bob and Mike Bryan in doubles. Then, this former member of the USTA Board of Directors, was appointed the general manager of USTA Elite Player Development to plan and implement the strategic direction of the development of future American champions. (Hopefully, as in the past, Stanford University will continue to play a significant part in this). And finally, Patrick was inducted into the Collegiate Tennis Hall of Fame in May. WIMBLEDON We look forward to following the progress of the Bryan twins and rapidly rising David Martin and Scott Lipsky at Wimbledon. Congratulations to Bob Bryan, who partnered with Victoria Azarenka, to win the French Open mixed doubles title. SPECIAL THANKS To Nanci Kauffman and her women’s interclub team for their special support of our respective men’s and women’s “Senior Day’s” . . .

It was a satisfying year for a young and developing team! Winning our 21st consecutive Pac 10 title given that two conference teams played for the national championship will be remembered for being a great achievement! We enjoyed a fabulous run in April beating UCLA, USC and Cal at home as well and carried some great momentum into the post season. Unfortunately we had some physical problems after our win over Clemson in the round of 16 and we could not get by a spirited and game Baylor team. We will miss our seniors, Whitney Deason, Lejla Hodzic and Celia Durkin, who all did an outstanding job over their 4 seasons, have 2 championships to show for it and this year especially provided so much guidance for our freshman! We will be welcoming three impressive freshman to next year’s team: Courtney Clayton- Ft. Lauderdale (sister of men’s team member Alex) Logan Hansen – Santa Monica Veronica Li – Delray Beach, FL Please come out to see us start up the season in October as we again host the ITA Regionals at Stanford on Oct. 17-21, 2008. Thanks again for all of your support this year! A very typical travel scene!

Brandon, JJ, and I were very pleased with the progress of the team this year. The foundation has been set for continued progress in the future. We ended this year on an upswing that will give us a boost starting next fall. We have the entire team back next year, except for graduating senior Phil Kao. We will be adding three excellent freshman (all left-handed) to the team in the fall - Jamie Hutter (Menlo Park, CA), Bradley Klahn (Poway, CA) and Ryan Thacher (Studio City, CA). According to tennisrecruiting.net, it is the #1 class in the country. The future looks bright!! We played the 1st and 2nd rounds of the NCAA tournament at Pepperdine. We beat UC-Santa Barbara first round, 4-0. We then were beaten by a very good Pepperdine team. We started well by winning the doubles point, but couldn’t come up with the additional three singles matches we needed. We lost 4-2. I was very proud of the effort. It was a good learning experience for our freshman, and sophomores who have never played in the NCAA team tournament before. Freshman Alex Clayton was the only player in the NCAA Individual Championships. He was the #8 seed, and made it to the semifinals. He lost to the eventual champion Somdev Devvarmann of Virginia in a very close match. Along with being an All-American, Alex was named ITA National Rookie of the Year - an honor well deserved. Another honor was given to senior Amy Brown. Amy has been our manager for the past four years. She was one of two people selected as an “ITA/Wilson intern.” She will be spending her summer in Chicago, and also will be helping Wilson Sporting Goods Co. at the US Open. I can’t think of anyone who deserved this honor more. She has been an incredible help to me, and also the team. We all wish her well. She’s the best!! It’s hard to believe another year has come and gone. I am looking forward to starting up my 23rd year in the program again in September. Hope you have a wonderful summer. See you at the courts next fall. John, Brandon, and JJ
