STANFORD TENNIS – SPRING, 2009 It is hard to believe that the Winter Quarter of matches has drawn to a close, and that the Spring schedule lays ahead. Even more difficult to accept is the fact that our home schedule is now half completed! Our teams continue to improve under their great coaches, and are taking each competition as a step toward a strong run for the NCAA Championship. Based on early season success, it is likely that both the men and women will host the Rounds of 64 and 32 – the men on Friday-Saturday, May 8 & 9, and the women on Saturday-Sunday, May 9 & 10. (NOTE: admission is charged for NCAA competition). 2011 NCAA MEN’S/WOMEN’S CHAMPIONSHIPS It is with great pride we received word in mid-February that Stanford will host the Men’s/Women’s NCAA team and individual championships in May, 2011. This is a reflection of the hard work of some 400 volunteers who worked so diligently to make the first combined men’s and women’s Championships such a success in 2006. Preliminary planning has now begun, and we trust that our efforts will make the 2011 Championships the best ever! TEAM GUIDE The annual Team Guide was mailed bulk rate in late February to those supporters and former players on our mailing list. However, this is the final year it will be mailed universally to all. It continues to be available on line (www.gostanford.com). If you did not receive the guide this year, please let the Director of Tennis know, and one will be mailed to you. COACHSHIP ENDOWMENTS We remind you we are actively seeking significant help for endowing our head men’s tennis coaching position and our assistant women’s coaching position. Each of these “named” endowments represents an investment of app. $1.5 million, which may be spread over a five-year period. BANK OF THE WEST CLASSIC – July 27-August 2 The 13th Bank of the West Classic to be hosted at the Taube Family Tennis Stadium promises to be one of the best yet. Early commitments include Grand Slam Champs Serena Williams (10), Venus Williams (7), and Maria Sharapova (3), 2008 Olympic Gold Medalist Elena Dementieva, and 2008 ITF World Singles Champ, Jelana Jankovic. It was an interesting winter for our very young and emerging team! After 2 warm-up tournaments in Las Vegas and Indian Wells in mid-January highlighted by Hilary Barte’s finalist showing in singles and doubles (with Lindsay Burdette), we started dual match play. With 5 good matches under our belt in late January and February, we went off to the Team Indoor Championships and came away with a rough 1-2 performance against a field of the top 15 teams. We learned a lot and after returning and getting our first 2 Pac-10 wins over the WA schools, we got ready for the Cal Bears. It should be noted that we were riding a 141 home match win streak lasting 10 years going into this match, and the Bears were the last team to win at our place! So last Saturday in the Zoom Marketing-sponsored “Spring Smash,” we wound up the victors after 5.5 hours and tons of drama over a great Cal team. If you were part of that fantastic crowd that day, thanks a lot as that was a big ingredient in our ability to come from behind and secure the victory! It was just the kind of performance that this young team can feel very good about and build upon.
We will conclude this month with our road trip to LA to face UCLA and USC, both top ten teams! Please join us for more exciting action as we host USF and Princeton in a couple weeks and then a great home schedule in April, concluding with Pepperdine Saturday April 11th on Senior Day! It has been an excellent winter quarter for the men’s team. We are ranked #1 for the first time since 2002. I am very proud of the team and what they have accomplished so far. The quarter started with the Sherwood Cup at the Sherwood Country Club in Westlake Village, CA. It was a good way to get matches to help prepare for the upcoming dual matches. Blake Muller and Richard Wire were the doubles champions of the event. Alex Clayton was a singles finalist. Our first dual match was scheduled for January 23, but the rain this quarter has made for a couple changes in our schedule. We played Sacramento State on January 27 and won. We then traveled to Boise, ID to play in the National Team Indoor qualifying. We beat Boise State and Auburn to qualify for the Team Indoors in Chicago. We were seeded #11 in the tournament, and proceeded to upset #7 Florida, and #2 Texas, before losing in the semi-finals to #3 Georgia. The matches we won were very close, but the guys found a way to win. A few points in the Georgia match made the difference. They are two-time NCAA Champions, and they showed why that day. They are a talented team, but we played them very close. After the Indoors, we had seven matches in thirteen days - not an easy stretch. It started with Pepperdine, a team that beat us last year in the NCAA’s, followed by Cal, Saint Mary’s, at USC, at UCLA, BYU, and finally, Santa Clara. I really wasn’t sure what to expect. But we won all seven matches. The matches that stand out in that stretch are the wins on the road at Cal, USC, and UCLA. All are difficult places to play, and all were matches that could have gone either way. The momentum shifts in the matches were incredible. I’ve been coaching twenty-three years, and I have never seen two matches in a row end like the ones in Los Angeles. Both matches ended with a third set tiebreaker in the final match to win the match. As I said before, this team is finding ways to win. Winning one match in LA is difficult enough, but to win both is amazing - it just doesn’t happen that often. It sets up a great weekend of tennis, March 27 UCLA, and March 28 USC at the Taube Family Tennis Stadium. The rematches should be something to see. Hopefully you can make it out. The quarter ended with a trip to La Jolla for the 120th Pacific Coast Doubles. It’s a great event and a special place to play. I want to thank all the people who helped put together the wonderful reception for the team at the home of Molly Thornton. I really appreciate all the friends of Stanford who were present.
