At Stanford: Was one of college baseball's premier closers during a stellar two-year collegiate career on The Farm...draft-eligible sophomore tied for fifth in Stanford history with 15 career saves, while logging a 12-4 ledger and 3.64 ERA (40er, 99.0ip) in 59 collegiate relief appearances...dominating closer fashioned a 5.04:1 strikeout-to-walk ratio, fanning 116 and issuing just 23 free passes in 99.0 innings...held collegiate batters to a paltry .236 batting average (87-for-368)...was a first team All-Pac-10 selection following each of his two seasons in a Cardinal uniform (2008 and '09)...led Stanford in both wins and saves in 2009, becoming the first Cardinal hurler to accomplish the feat since future major leaguer Jeff Ballard did so in 1984...his eight saves in 2008 are tied for the seventh-highest single-season total in Stanford history, while he became the fourth freshman to crack the top-10 list...in 2008, became the seventh Stanford player, and fourth pitcher, to earn Freshman All-America status...was a first-team freshman All-America selection by Collegiate Baseball/Louisville Slugger, a second-team honoree by Rivals.com and a third-team selection by Ping!Baseball...emerged as a high-end stopper with Stanford after working as a starter throughout high school...does not get rattled and is intensely competitive, giving him the perfect closer's makeup...has a devastating slider and a mid 90s fastball...also developed a changeup during the fall, where he worked as a starter to further enhance all three pitches...throws a lot of strikes, and attacks the hitter...was previously selected by the New York Yankees in the 34th round of the 2007 MLB First-Year Player Draft, but did not sign a professional contract...becomes Stanford's 23rd all-time first round pick (21st since 1987), and the 13th pitcher.
As a Sophomore in 2009: First team All-Pac-10 performer became the first Stanford pitcher to lead the club in both wins and saves in the same season since future major leaguer Jeff Ballard did so in 1984...also paced the club in ERA and games pitched, going 7-1 with seven saves and a 3.80 ERA (18er, 42.2ip) in 28 relief appearances...compiled 66 strikeouts in just 44.2 innings of work, while issuing only eight walks for an astounding 8.3:1 strikeout-to-walk ratio...limited opponents to a .210 batting average (34-for-162), including a paltry .182 mark against right-handed hitters (16-for-88)...finished the regular season ranked among the Pac-10 leaders for games finished (3rd - 21), appearances (t-5th), saves (t-6th) and wins (t-7th), while his five saves in conference games tied for the league's third-highest total...was named to the 40-player watch list for the NCBWA Stopper of the Year award...statistically factored into 14 of Stanford's 30 victories, while pitching in 22 of the Cardinal's wins...gave an indication of the dominating campaign to come in his first appearance, striking out five over 2.2 innings to earn the win February 21 vs. Vanderbilt (Game 2)...walked the first batter he faced on the season, then faced 80 batters before issuing his second free pass...combined with Brett Mooneyham on a two-hit shutout of Washington March 29, fanning five in 2.0 frames to close out the 11-0 victory...appearance against the Huskies started an incredible six-outing run in which he struck out 20 and did not walk a batter in 12.1-scoreless innings...allowed just five hits in 50 at-bats (.125) during the stretch, while going 2-0 with three saves...struck out five of the six hitters he faced over 2.0-scoreless innings to earn the victory April 1 vs. Santa Clara...faced four batters April 9 vs. UCLA, and struck them all out swinging to record the win...tossed 3.0-innings of one-hit, shutout ball against the Bruins two days later for the save...after his 12.1-consecutive inning scoreless streak was snapped April 18, was unscored upon in his next five outings (7.0ip)...turned in a sensational effort May 23 vs. Oregon State, with a career high eight strikeouts in just 2.2 innings for the win...was forced to record 10 outs when a pair of batters reached via a third strike wild pitch, but he did not walk a batter and allowed just one hit in a 7-6 Stanford victory...logged five different five-strikeout performances...recorded at least four outs in 18 of his 28 appearances, including 11 outings of at least 2.0 innings.
