No. 25 Stanford Avenges Early Season Loss to Archrival Cal, 73-63

STANFORD, Calif. -- Kris Weems and David Moseley each scored 16 points as number 25Stanford cruised to a 73-63 victory over Pac-10 Conferencearchrival California in a morning game.

The game started at 10:00 a.m. local time because of televisioncommitments, but it did not have an effect on the Cardinal(18-7, 10-6 Pac-10), who took the lead in the first 10 minutesand never relinquished it.

"Well, that felt good," said Stanford coach Mike Montgomery."This was a great win. This win was huge. I mean huge. Theloss would have put a lot of pressure on us. ... I thought thiswas a heck of a week. My (50th) birthday and my (200th) win atStanford."

Randy Duck scored 16 points and Tony Gonzalez added 14 forCalifornia (19-8, 10-6), which played its first game without itsleading scorer, Ed Gray (24.8 points per game), who is out forthe remainder of the season with a broken foot.

"We'll bounce back, and it's good to get a game like this underour belts without Ed Gray," California coach Ben Braun said. "Ithought we made some adjustments and we'll continue to makeadjustments. We just have to step up."

Without Gray, Cal was unable to sweep Stanford, which remainedthe only unbeaten home team in the Pac-10 (10-0). The Cardinal, who have won five of their last six games, finish the regularseason with home games against Arizona and Arizona State onThursday and Saturday, respectively. Cal hosts Arizona and thenArizona State to finish out its slate.

Stanford's quick passing attack was led by Brevin Knight, whohad 13 of the team's 22 assists, and added five points and ninerebounds without leaving the game. Knight also committed six ofthe 12 turnovers by Stanford, which has 47 assists in its lasttwo games.

"I thought Brevin controlled the game," Montgomery said. "Hedistributed the ball well."

"I thought we did a real good job on Brevin," Braun admitted. "Alot of teams can't do what we do on Brevin."

The Cardinal took the lead for good, 7-6, on Arthur Lee'sfive-foot baseline jumper 4:02 into the game. Duck scored from15 feet with 12:25 left to forge Cal's final tie, but Stanfordresponded with a 7-0 run over the ensuing two minutes and neverlet the Golden Bears within four points thereafter.

Weems started the run with a 19-foot jumper, added athree-pointer and Lee finished it with a layup. Stanford wasable to stretch its advantage to as much as 12 points in thefirst half, but Cal scored the final five points to get within36-29 at intermission.

The Golden Bears were within 44-37 with 13:26 left when Stanfordbroke open the game with another 7-0 run, this time on two freethrows by Peter Sauer, a three-pointer by Moseley and a tip-inby Mark Madsen.

The Cardinal built the lead as high as 67-47 on Moseley's layupwith 4:15 remaining, but Cal closed with a 16-6 run to make thefinal score respectable.

Cal was undermined by 37 percent shooting (24-of-65) and sawStanford make half of its 22 three-point attempts. The Cardinalshot 44 percent (27-of-62) from the floor.

"We concentrated down low and gambled that their three-pointshooters weren't hitting," Montgomery said. "We knew that Randywould pick up the slack with the absence of Ed. Overall, I ampleased."

"They played good defense and shot the ball well, especially onthrees," Braun said. "I thought our post players wereaggressive and we stuck with our game plan. This will pay offin the long run."
