No. 25 Stanford Avenges Early Season Loss to Archrival Cal, 73-63

STANFORD, Calif. -- Kris Weems and David Moseley each scored 16 points as number 25 Stanford cruised to a 73-63 victory over Pac-10 Conference archrival California in a morning game.

The game started at 10:00 a.m. local time because of television commitments, but it did not have an effect on the Cardinal (18-7, 10-6 Pac-10), who took the lead in the first 10 minutes and never relinquished it.

"Well, that felt good," said Stanford coach Mike Montgomery. "This was a great win. This win was huge. I mean huge. The loss would have put a lot of pressure on us. ... I thought this was a heck of a week. My (50th) birthday and my (200th) win at Stanford."

Randy Duck scored 16 points and Tony Gonzalez added 14 for California (19-8, 10-6), which played its first game without its leading scorer, Ed Gray (24.8 points per game), who is out for the remainder of the season with a broken foot.

"We'll bounce back, and it's good to get a game like this under our belts without Ed Gray," California coach Ben Braun said. "I thought we made some adjustments and we'll continue to make adjustments. We just have to step up."

Without Gray, Cal was unable to sweep Stanford, which remained the only unbeaten home team in the Pac-10 (10-0). The Cardinal, who have won five of their last six games, finish the regular season with home games against Arizona and Arizona State on Thursday and Saturday, respectively. Cal hosts Arizona and then Arizona State to finish out its slate.

Stanford's quick passing attack was led by Brevin Knight, who had 13 of the team's 22 assists, and added five points and nine rebounds without leaving the game. Knight also committed six of the 12 turnovers by Stanford, which has 47 assists in its last two games.

"I thought Brevin controlled the game," Montgomery said. "He distributed the ball well."

"I thought we did a real good job on Brevin," Braun admitted. "A lot of teams can't do what we do on Brevin."

The Cardinal took the lead for good, 7-6, on Arthur Lee's five-foot baseline jumper 4:02 into the game. Duck scored from 15 feet with 12:25 left to forge Cal's final tie, but Stanford responded with a 7-0 run over the ensuing two minutes and never let the Golden Bears within four points thereafter.

Weems started the run with a 19-foot jumper, added a three-pointer and Lee finished it with a layup. Stanford was able to stretch its advantage to as much as 12 points in the first half, but Cal scored the final five points to get within 36-29 at intermission.

The Golden Bears were within 44-37 with 13:26 left when Stanford broke open the game with another 7-0 run, this time on two free throws by Peter Sauer, a three-pointer by Moseley and a tip-in by Mark Madsen.

The Cardinal built the lead as high as 67-47 on Moseley's layup with 4:15 remaining, but Cal closed with a 16-6 run to make the final score respectable.

Cal was undermined by 37 percent shooting (24-of-65) and saw Stanford make half of its 22 three-point attempts. The Cardinal shot 44 percent (27-of-62) from the floor.

"We concentrated down low and gambled that their three-point shooters weren't hitting," Montgomery said. "We knew that Randy would pick up the slack with the absence of Ed. Overall, I am pleased."

"They played good defense and shot the ball well, especially on threes," Braun said. "I thought our post players were aggressive and we stuck with our game plan. This will pay off in the long run."
