THE CARDINAL: Stanford concludes the 1997 season by hosting the University of California in the 100th meeting of The Big Game ... The Big Game is tied for the 10th longest rivalry in college football ... Leading up to the game, luncheons, dinners, plays, musicals, bonfires and other events highlight a very full week of Big Game events ... The game has been a sellout for several weeks as all 85,500 seats in Stanford Stadium will be full ... Stanford enters the game having lost its last five games, the longest losing streak on The Farm since 1989 ... The Bears, meanwhile, have lost seven of their last eight games.
BIG GAME TELEVISION: The Big Game will be televised live locally on KGO Channel 7 in the Bay Area beginning at 12:30 ... Brian Webber will call the play-by-play with former Stanford player Darrin Nelson and former Cal player Matt Bouza adding commentary and KGO's Mike Shuman on the sideline ... TROY'S TALE: Junior flanker Troy Walters is turning in one of the greatest seasons by a receiver in school and Pac-10 history (80 receptions, 1,106 yards, seven TDs) ... Last week, he set a new Stanford record for most receptions in a season, breaking Brad Muster's 1985 record of 78 ... He is also just 12 receiving yards shy of breaking Gene Washington's 1968 record of 1,117 receiving yards in a season ...He had eight receptions for 118 yards and two touchdowns vs. Washington State last Saturday to go along with a third TD on a 77-yard punt return, his second in two weeks ... Walters ranks first in the Pac-10 and third in the nation in receptions per game (8.0), second in the Pac-10 and fifth nationally in receiving yards per game (110.6), second in the conference and 14th in the NCAA in punt return average (14.1) and fourth in the conference and 15th in the country in al-purpose yards (155.6) ... His 80 receptions rank second all-time on the Pac-10 single season chart, just 10 behind conference record holder Keyshawn Johnson of USC ... In the last two games (USC, WSU), Walters has caught 19 passes for 327 yards and four receiving touchdowns and has returned two punts for touchdowns, a 66-yarder vs. USC and a 77-yarder vs. WSU ... Against USC, Walters, from College Station, Texas, grabbed 11 receptions for 209 yards and two touchdowns to go along with his punt return ... His 209 yards receiving against the Trojans was the third highest single game total in school history and it was also only the third time in Stanford history that a receiver gained over 200 yards in a game ...Earlier in the season, Walters had 13 catches vs. Oregon, which left him one shy of the school's single game record of 14, held by four players ...A reserve player in '96, Walters finished the regular season by catching 21 balls for 291 yards in the final four games ... In his last 14 regular season games, he has caught 101 passes for 1,397 yards, nine receiving touchdowns and three TDs on punt returns ... Walters is also third all-time at Stanford in career punt return average (12.8), fourth in career punt return yards (677), fourth in season punt return average (14.1) and fourth in season punt return yards (409).

QUARTERBACK / PITCHER: Junior Chad Hutchinson (two years of eligibility remaining after the '97 season), is one of the top two-sport athletes in the nation ... He has been Stanford's starting quarterback the past two seasons - starting the last 22 games ... He played just two plays last Saturday at Washington State before suffering a sprained right thumb, forcing him to miss the entire game ... As a quarterback, Hutchinson is already among the top-10 all-time passers in Stanford history ... In baseball, he is 15-6 as a starting pitcher (114 strikeouts, 106.1 innings pitched) ... His 95 mph fastball is one of the reasons he is projected to be a first round draft pick in June, 1998 ... Hutchinson has thrown for 4,041 yards in his career (Sun Bowl stats do not count), placing him eighth on the school's all-time list ... After a 214 yard passing game vs. Arizona State on Oct. 18, Hutchinson moved past Mike Cordova (1973-75), John Brodie (1954-56) and Dick Norman (1958-60) ... He is 42 yards shy of Mike Boryla (1970-73) for seventh on the all-time list (Boryla passed for 4,082 yards) ... A former first round draft pick in baseball (26th pick overall by Braves, June, 1995), Hutchinson has been a starting pitcher for the Cardinal baseball team the past two seasons and will enter the '98 season as one of the top pitching prospects in college baseball ... He is eligibile for the major league baseball draft in June, 1998 following his junior season ... He began the '97 campaign by throwing for 302 yards in the season opener vs. San Jose State - the second 300-yard effort of his career ... He threw his third 300-yard game against Oregon (Sept. 27) when he completed 21-of-31 for 340 yards, four touchdowns and no interceptions ... The four TD passes were a career-best and tied him with several others for eighth place on Stanford's single-game TD passes list ... In the last two years on The Farm, Hutchinson has participated in two bowl games (the 1995 Liberty Bowl as a redshirt freshman and the '96 Sun Bowl as the starting QB), two NCAA baseball regional playoffs and one College World Series, that coming last season ... He was a Freshman All-American in baseball in 1995 and last year he was the Offensive MVP of the Sun Bowl.
KAILEE'S CORNER: Senior DE Kailee Wong was named to the Football News' First-Team All-America squad last week, becomming the first Cardinal defensive lineman since Duncan McColl in 1976 to earn All-America honors ... He currently leads the Pacific-10 Conference in both quarterback sacks with 11 and tackles-for-loss with 21 ... He was among the final 12 for the Lombardi Award - presented annually to the nation's top lineman - and among the final 15 for The Football News Defensive Player of the Year Award ... Against USC, Wong had five tackles, three tackles-for-loss and two quarterback sacks ... The week prior against UCLA, he recorded eight total tackles, seven unassisted, three tackles-for-loss and one and a half sacks ... He has already been chosen to play in the East-West Shrine Game at Stanford Stadium and the Hula Bowl in Maui ...Wong, a First-Team All-Pac-10 selection last season, recorded a safety in consecutive games - vs. Oregon and Notre Dame - when he sacked the quarterback in the end zone late in the game ... In his last 21 games, he has accounted for 22 sacks and 42 tackles-for-loss ...He has at least one tackle-for-loss in all 10 games and at least one sack in seven of the 10 games in '97.
BOOK REPORT: Anthony Bookman turned in his fourth 100-yard rushing game of the season last week as he gained 115 yards on just 11 carries to move ahead of teammate Mike Mitchell into third place on Stanford's all-time rushing list ... Bookman, who leads the team with 730 yards rushing this season, now has 2,453 career rushing yards, moving him ahead of Mitchell for the first time ... Bookman is also fifth all-time at Stanford in career all-purpose yards with 4,326 ...Bookman rushed for 100-yards in three consecutive games early this season ... In fact, both Bookman and Mitchell rushed for over 100-yards in three consecutive game, becomming the first pair of Cardinal running backs in school history to each gain over 100-yards rushing in three straight games ... Bookman had 120 yards on 14 carries vs. Oregon State, then followed that game with a 150-yard (17 carries), two TD game vs. Oregon and a season-best 142 yards, two touchdowns, 14 carriess vs. Notre Dame ... He has TD runs this season of 58, 60, 67 and 70 yards.
MITCHELL'S MOMENTS: Mike Mitchell has enjoyed great success over the Bears in the last two Big Games as he has rushed for 265 yards and scored two touchdowns on 50 carries in the '95 and '96 Big Games ... Mitchell, of course, follows Bookman on Stanford's career rushing and all-purpose yards lists ... He is fourth in Cardinal history in rushing (2,431 yards) and sixth in all-purpose yards (3,686) ... In the 1995 Big Game, won by Stanford 29-24, Mitchell rushed 26 times for 138 yards and two touchdowns ... In last season's 42-21 Cardinal win, Mitchell gained 127 yards on 24 carries and scored a TD on a three-yard reception ... This season, he has gained 582 yards on 144 carries and scored four touchdowns ... He is tied for seventh all-time at Stanford with 23 career TDs ... His three consecutive 100-yard games this season included a 102-yard, 18 carry effort vs. Oregon State, 109 yards on 24 carries vs. Oregon and 135-yard, two TDs and 29 carries vs. Notre Dame
DRAFT'S DAY: Senior ILB Chris Draft, who missed three games earlier this season with a hamstring injury, had one of his finest games last Saturday at WSU ... Draft, who leads the team with 69 total tackles despite playing just seven games, was credited with 18 tackles, two tackles-for-loss, one quarterback sack and one interception against the Cougars ... He is once again among the Pac-10 leaders in tackles-per game (9.9 tpg) ... A second-team All-Pac-10 pick in 1996, Draft has averaged 9.3 tackles per game for Stanford since he moved into the starting lineup in 1995 ... He has registered 269 tackles in those 29 games from '95-97 and has been one of the Pac-10's best inside linebackers.
DUNN DEAL: Senior WR Damon Dunn scored a touchdown on a nine-yard reverse play and returned a kick 89 yards in last week's game at WSU as he once again proved to be a big play threat ... Dunn, the school record holder for kickoff return yardage and kickoff returns for touchdowns, nearly had his fourth career TD, but was caught at the four-yard line after his 89 yard return ... He is currently leading the Pac-10 and is ninth nationally with a 27.0 kickoff return average ... He is second all-time at Stanford with a 26.7 kickoff return average and his 1,950 kickoff return yards is school record ... Dunn has made a living off the reverse play ... He has run the play eight times in his career and has scored five TDs, including two this season (vs. San Jose State, WSU).
SENIORS' FINAL GAME: Nineteen Cardinal seniors will be playing in their final game on Saturday, including 12 starters (4 on offense, 8 on defense) ... The auction, which is a joint Stanford-Cal effort, has a goal of raising $2 million for the scholarship funds at each school ($1 million each) ... Bob Murphy and Joe Starkey will emcee the event, which begins at 5:30 pm with a silent auction ... Christie's will provide the live auction at 7:30 pm
TYRONE WILLINGHAM: Now in his third season at Stanford, Tyrone Willingham, the 1995 Pac-10 Coach of the Year, enters Saturday's game with an overall record of 18-15-1 ... He has led the Cardinal to back-to-back bowl appearances and is only the third coach in school history to lead Stanford to bowl games in his first two years on The Farm (the other two are Tiny Thornhill in 1933 and '34 and Bill Walsh in '77 and '78) ... Willingham spent 17 years as an assistant coach on the college and professional levels before being named Stanford's head coach on Dec. 9, 1994 ... He previously coached the running backs at Stanford under Denny Green from 1989-91.

Great Big Games
The Big Game has produced a number of thrilling, down-to-the-wire games, including four that were decided on the game's final play ... Below are just some of the many highlights in Big Game history. November 17, 1990 - Stanford scored nine points in the final 12 seconds to pull out a 27-25 win in perhaps the most exciting Big Game in history ... Stanford's Jason Palumbis hit Ed McCaffrey for a 19-yard TD with 12 seconds remaining in the game to bring Stanford within a point at 25-24 ... When the ensuing 2-point conversion attempt failed, Cal appeared to have the victory ... But, the Cardinal recovered the onsides kick and after a 15-yard Cal penality put the ball on the Bear's 22, Stanford's John Hopkins hit a 39-yard field goal as time ran out to lift the Cardinal to a stunning 27-25 victory. November 19, 1988 - Stanford's Tuan Van Le blocked a 20-yard field goal attempt by Cal's Robbie Keen with four second to play to preserve a 19-19 tie ... It was the 11th tie in Big Game history. November 20, 1982 - The Play became one of the most famous plays in college football history. Stanford led 20-19 after Mark Harmon kicked a 34-yard field goal with four seconds left to put the Cardinal on top. On the ensuing kickoff, Cal scored a touchdown on an incredible five-lateral, 57-yard return that ended when the Bear's Kevin Moen bowled over Gary Tyrell, the trombonist in the Stanford band, for the TD. November 20, 1976 - In a game that saw five lead changes, Stanford , behind its alternating QB tandem of Mike Cordova and Guy Benjamin, beat Cal 27-24. The Bears led 24-19 late in the game, but Cal's Markey Crane fumbled on the Bear's two yard line and with 1:31 left in the game, Stanford's Ron Inge scored the winning TD ... It was the final game for Stanford head coach Jack Christiansen. November 23, 1974 - Stanford won 22-20 when Mike Langford connnected on a 50-yard field goal in the waning moments of the game ... Cal's Steve Bartkowski hit Steve Rivera for a TD with 26 seconds to play, but Guy Benjamin need just 19 seconds to put Stanford in field goal range. November 18, 1972 - Cal won 24-21 on the game's final play - an 8-yard TD pass from Vince Ferragamo to Steve Sweeny ... Cal coach Mike White elected to go for the win rather than a short field goal for the tie. November 22, 1947 - In what was considered the best Big Game to date, the 50th meeting between Stanford and Cal almost produced an unthinkable upset ... Winless Stanford (0-8) had the 8-1 Bears down 18-14 with less than three minutes left in the game ... But, Cal QB Jackie Jensen hit Paul Keckley on an 80-yard TD pass play to lift Cal to a 21-18 win.

Noting the Bears
California comes into the Big Game after a 41-38 overtime loss to Arizona last weekend ... The Bears are 3-7 overall and 1-6 in the conference - good for ninth place ... Quarterback Justin Vedder is eighth in the Pac-10 in passing efficiency with 126.8 rating points ... Senior Bobby Shaw is second in the Pac-10 in receptions (6.9 rpg) behind Stanford's Troy Walters ... The Bears began the season with victories over Houston and Oklahoma, but then went on a five-game losing streak before defeating Oregon State on November 1 ... The last Big Game victory for Cal was in 1994, when the Bears defeated the Cardinal 24-23 at Memorial Stadium ... The last Bears victory at Stanford Stadium was in 1993.
Head Coach Tom Holmoe
Holmoe is not only in his first season at the helm of the Cal program, but also his first season as a head coach of any program ... Holmoe played professionally for seven years with the San Francisco 49ers, bringing home three Super Bowl rings ... After retiring from pro football, Holmoe served as a graduate assistant at his alma mater BYU before coaching under Bill Walsh at Stanford from 1992-1993 ... In 1994, he served under George Seifert as the San Francisco 49ers defensive backfield coach for two seasons ... He was Cal's defensive coordinator in 1996 before being named head coach on Jan. 18, 1997.
The Series
Stanford leads the all-time series 49-39-11 and has won the last two ... Since 1961, the Cardinal owns a 24-11-1 record vs. Cal ... In recent Big Games at Stanford Stadium, the Cardinal has won five of the last six dating back to 1985 ... Only once in the 1990's (1994) has the Big Game not included a bowl team.
The Last Time
Stanford tied its own Big Game record by scoring 42 points in a lopsided 42-21 win ... Miker Mitchell gained 127 yards on the ground and Chad Hutchinson threw three TD passes as Stanford built a 27-7 halftime lead and never looked back ... Kailee Wong's 53-yard interception return early in the second quarter put Stanford on top 17-0 ... A season-best 220-yards rushing aided the Cardinal offensive attack.
.
Big Game Notebook
The Big Game is tied for the 10th longest rivalry in NCAA Division 1-A college football history ... This year's 100th meeting puts the Big Game tied with Purdue-Indiana for 10th on the all-time list ... The top-10 list of longest rivalries in college football is listed below:
Games Teams First Game 107 Minnesota-Wisconsin 1890 106 Missouri-Kansas 1891 104 Nebraksa-Kansas 1892 104 Baylor-TCU 1899 104 Texas-Texas A&M 1894 102 North Carolina-Virginia 1892 102 Miami (Ohio)-Cincinnati 1888 101 Auburn-Georgia 1892 101 Oregon-Oregon State 1894 100 Stanford-California 1892 100 Purdue-Indiana 1891Both teams will wear retro uniforms for the game ... Stanford's uniform, circa 1935, will consist of Cardinal jerseys with 8" numbers on the front and 10" numbers on the back (nothing else), brown pants with Cardinal stripes and a plain white helmet. Halftime will be extended from the normal 20 minutes to a total of 30 minutes ... As the home team, Stanford will be penalized for delay of game at the outset of the second half ... By agreement, Cal will decline the penalty. Stanford head coach Tyrone Willingham has been a part of five Big Games - and has won them all ... As a Cardinal assistant coach from 1989-91, Stanford won all three games ... As a head coach, Willingham has beaten Cal in each of the past two years. Stanford-Cal coaching ties include Cardinal linebacker coach Kent Baer, a Cal assistant from 1987-91, Cal head coach Tom Holmoe, a Stanford assistant under Bill Walsh in 1993-94 and Cal assistant Doug Cosbie, another Stanford assistant under Walsh from 1993-94. To the winner of the Big Game goes "The Axe"... The Axe made its first appearance at a Stanford-Cal baseball game on April 13, 1899, but it wasn't until 1933 that the two universities decided that The Axe would be a trophy given to the winner of The Big Game. The Big Game was interrupted from 1915-18 and again from 1943-45 (World War II) ... When the two schools disagreed over freshman eligibility, athletic relations were severed from 1915-18 ... Stanford's "Big Game" became their annual rugby match with Santa Clara. The first Big Game was played on March 10, 1892 at the Haight Street Grounds in San Francisco ... Cal had fielded a team for 10 years, but for upstart Stanford University, which opened on October 1, 1891, this was to be their first intercollegiate football game ... Stanford pulled off the upstart, beating the more experienced Bears 14-10.
