George Washington Post Game Quotes

March 24, 2008

Head Coach Joe McKeown

This was just a great college basketball game tonight, and I just want to congratulate Cal.  ?It was an unbelievable way for us to win the game, and I realize a tough way for them to lose. ? They proved that they deserved to be a #3 seed. ? I’m really proud of our team. ? It was one of those games that will go down as one of the great games in GW history.  We were behind the whole game but we just kept battling.? I told them at halftime and before the game that this is a player’s tournament, and Sarah-Jo made big plays, Antelia, Kim and Jessica Adair made big plays.? Kim made a great pass to Sarah-Jo for the (game winning) alley oop. ? I know it wasn’t pretty, it wasn’t a high scoring game.? Both teams left everything on the floor.

(On ranking this game among his career highlights) I haven’t had time to absorb anything right now, but I’m just proud of our team.  These guys have had a lot of wins, they’ve won 100 or so games.  Maybe in April and May we’ll sit down and watch the tape.

(On second half defensive adjustments) We did a really good job on Devannia Hampton, obviously she’s a premier player.  The second half we did a much better job.  We tried to make a conscience effort to contest the open threes.  In the first half part of our strategy was to double them and make them shoot, and they made six threes.  So the second half we tightened up on the perimeter.  I think more importantly was the way our players communicated in the second half.

(On Cal’s last turnover) I had a pretty good look from the sideline.  It looked like she dribbled into a trap and she was trying to get to the sideline and I don’t think she expected us to come and trap her.  It looked to me to be a pretty good call.  I think Sarah-Jo and Kim caught her a little off guard with the trap.

George Washington Guard Sarah-Jo Lawrence

(On the game-typing bakset) We have experience with close games at the end.  We just want to attack in those situations when their defense isn’t set.  So when I got the ball I knew I was going to attack.  I got to the rim and luckily no one was there.?

(On the game-winning basket) We had to concentrate on rebounding.  Luckily it came right to me and I put it in and made it.

George Washington Guard Kimberly Beck

(On the team’s experience in tight games) We’ve been here before in similar situations.  We knew (Coach) wasn’t going to call a timeout, we just had to keep being aggressive.  When there’s that much time on the clock you have to keep being aggressive.  Sarah-Jo took over in those last couple seconds and it worked out well for us.

George Washington Guard Antelia Parrish

(On attacking Ashley Walker and Devonnai Hampton) Coach told me to just keep going at them, to just keep being aggressive and going to the basket and try to get them in foul trouble and that’s what I tried to do in the second half.
