Diary Entry #9: 3/27/00

The importance of the opening-round win over Michigan win was that it dictated what we would be doing the days following it. You win and you're still in and we are ateam that wanted to be playing. It was a very important win in terms ofthat in particular (the mental aspect). Defense and rebounding are alwaysthe focus. We did a better job - also, we had a great scouting job doneby our staff and we played them according to what we studied which waseffective. Down the stretch free throws and being poised was key tovictory.

We did not play the way we are capable of playing with thisgroup against Georgia. Our team did not shoot the ball the way we can and that hurtus. We shoot a better percentage from the outside and we should havefinished some nice shots on the inside that we did not convert on. Ourdefense and rebounding was fairly solid, however. There were moments ofgood play, but we did not put together a complete 40 minute game. Peopleplayed hard, but we did not have the game we needed to win.

The season had its moments of good things, but it wasdissapointing as well. Our goals were not reached (for our conference andpostseason play); but we learned a lot from our experiences and that willfuel us to prepare for next year. Our team has really grown since thebeginning of the season and I only see us improving more together for thefuture. I am excited to get working again and see everyone put in theirtime towards a group that we are all dedicated to and respect. In terms ofmy individual play there are many things I want to improve upon. I learnall the time what helps me compete as an athlete, from the concretephysical things that I want to improve upon as well as the the mentalaspects. I want to be very consistent next year and I plan to really focusin on specific things between now and next fall to get ready for theseason. I was not satisfied overall with the season- that does not meanthat I do not recognize the moments when good things happen- but rather itis that I want to recognize those moments and put together a season ofthem.

Off-season plans were first thing I thought about when I got back to our hotelafter the Georgia game- what can I do in the off-season to get ready fornext year. I am going to focus on specific things- in the weight roomgetting stronger- I have gotten stronger every year and when I reallyfocus on training hard but smart it pays off. I am going to work on myvertical- set up a program and stick to it. As far as skills go- I want towork a lot one on one in the low post- to be able to read the defense andscore consistently is important. I will continue to work on my outsideskills- with my extra time I want to work on the perimeter- pull ups, drives as well as 3 pt. shot. I am also going to work on my foot speed andbalance as well as my hands.

As for our prospects next season, I believe most everyone is on the same page - we aredissapointed but believe in our potential. What that means is that we havethe fire to want to improve and we believe we can improve and besuccessful. That is a good combination to have and I believe in myteamates to work hard and continue to support each other all the way. Ourgoals will be set high and there is a lot of work as well as time to workbetween now and next season. It is what we do with that time that willdictate the experiences of next season. If we really stick to our programand stay focused while having fun and supporting each other (which I seebeing true); we expect to have a great year.
