An All-Pac-8 Team selection in 1931, Clapp, a member of the 1929 and ’31 Pac-8 Conference title Cardinal teams would go on to become the first Stanford alum to represent the Cardinal on the U.S. Olympic men’s water polo team as both a player and a coach in his distinguished career. Clapp played for the 1928 and 1932 U.S. Olympic water polo teams, winning a bronze medal at the 1932 Los Angeles Games. Additionally, Clapp made the 1928 U.S. Olympic Swim Team, capturing a gold medal as part of the 4x200m freestyle relay team in Amsterdam. He was also a 1932 NCAA Champion in the 220 yard freestyle with a time of 2:18.00. He would serve as the head coach of the 1948 U.S. Olympic Water Polo team at the London Games, where the U.S. reached the tournament’s second round. In 1976, Clapp was enshrined as a charter member into the USA Water Polo Hall of Fame.
