As an athlete, he was one of the greatest players in school-history, Shepard hit a record .362 from 1951-53. He was the backstop for the Cardinal's first CWS team in 1953, catching the likes of Bob Murphy, who won a record 11 games while Shepard hit .379. After four years of professional baseball with the Pirates he returned to Stanford. Shepard volunteered his time for over 40 years as the chairman of the athletics board and was instrumental in early fundraising efforts. He passed away in 1995 at the age of 63.
