STANFORD, Calif. - Colin McCall, an outside hitter from Hermosa Beach, Calif., has signed with the Stanford men's volleyball program, Cardinal coach John Kosty announced Wednesday.
McCall, of Vistamar High School, will join fall signees Cole Fiers (Palos Verdes Estates/Palos Verdes HS), Clay Jones (La Jolla/La Jolla HS), and Kevin Rakestraw (Newport Beach/Newport Harbor HS) on the team in 2014.
"Colin was a great find for us," Kosty said. "He has a tremendous amount of passion for volleyball and for Stanford. He has not had a lot of years in the game, but his abilities on the court suggest otherwise. Colin will do a fantastic job for us."
McCall, who is 6-foot-4, helped lead Vistamar to the 2012 CIF-Southern Section Division V semifinals during his junior year. He was named to the All CIF-SS Division V and All-Santa Fe League first teams. McCall is the Vikings' team captain and was the team MVP last season.
McCall also plays club ball for the Manhattan Beach Surf Volleyball Club. His 17-under team was ranked second nationally and finished fifth at the U.S. junior nationals in 2012. This year, his MB Surf 18 team is again a national contender.
McCall has also spent time in the USA Volleyball High Performance pipeline. Even as a relative newcomer to the sport in 2011, he performed well in national camps, which is shown by his selection as the top outside hitter in the 2012 A3 camp.
"Colin has great overall skills," Kosty said. "He can pass and play defense at a high level, has the ability to hit any kind of set, and plays fast. He is a competitor and a winner. What's exciting is that he has a lot of growth ahead of him. As he gets bigger and stronger, he will become a strong contributor to Stanford volleyball."
