LOS ANGELES, Calif. - Andrew Yun was named the Pac-12 Men's Golf Scholar-Athlete of the Year, as announced on Saturday afternoon by the Conference office.
Yun becomes the second Stanford men's golfer to receive the honor since Rob Grube in the 2007-08 academic year when the award was inaugurated.
The award, which is presented in each of the 22 sports the Conference sponsors, was established to honor collegiate student-athletes who are standouts both academically and in their sports discipline.
Yun, the reigning Pac-12 Champion, has won two collegiate titles and amassed 16 top-10 finishes during his collegiate career. He was in the Stanford lineup for all 11 events his freshman campaign, carding a 72.2 stroke average for 34 rounds of competition. He enjoyed two top-10 finishes that year, highlighted by a third place showing at the Gifford Intercollegiate.
As a sophomore Yun garnered first team All-Pac-10 and first team PING All-America accolades after leading the Cardinal with a 70.6 stroke average in 31 rounds of competition and carding the lowest five rounds and three lowest tournament scores on the team. He competed in all 11 events and enjoyed seven top-10 finishes for the season, including a first-place finish at The Prestige at PGA West and was named a semifinalist for the Ben Hogan Award.
As a junior, Yun was a first team All-Pac-12 selection and earned second team All-America laurels after posting six top-10 finishes including a victory at the Pac-12 Championships. He participated in 12 events last season (37 rounds) and carded the second-best stroke average on the squad (71.6). Yun was also a second team Pac-12 All-Academic honoree in 2012.
Yun is one of five finalists for the Byron Nelson Award, given annually to the collegiate golfer who best demonstrates proficiency on the course and in the classroom while displaying exceptional sportsmanship, integrity and character.
Early in the 2012-13 academic year, Yun took a leave of absence from Stanford to compete in the PGA Q-School, the PGA Tour qualifying tournament. Yun returned to school for the winter quarter to complete his sociology degree. He has taken on a full winter and spring course load (18 units apiece) while posting two top-10 finishes, including a third-place showing at the 2013 U.S. Intercollegiate.
In order to be eligible for the Pac-12 Scholar-Athlete of the Year award, student-athletes must be a senior (in athletics eligibility) on track to receive a degree, have a grade point average of 3.0 or higher, participate in at least 50% of the scheduled contests in the sport and have a minimum of one year in residence at the institution. Each Pac-12 institution may nominate one individual per sport, and the winners are selected by a committee of Pac-12 staff members at the conclusion of each sport's regular season. The athletic accomplishments of the nominees are a consideration in the voting for the award.
Other nominees included Trent Redfern of Arizona, Matthew Rawitzer of Oregon State, Pedro Figueiredo of UCLA, Charlie Hughes of Washington and Hank Frame of Washington State.
