The Farm Report
No. 22 Stanford travels to No. 8 Arizona State for a three-game Pac-12 Conference baseball series this weekend at Packard Stadium.

Stanford notched four straight Pac-12 series victories before getting swept last week at Oregon. It was the first league sweep suffered by the Cardinal this season and its first to a league foe since falling three times in 2012 at Arizona.

This will be Stanford's fourth series against a top-25 opponent. The Cardinal lost two of three at No. 17 Rice, swept No. 22 Texas, won two of three against No. 17 Arizona and was swept at No. 7 Oregon.

Four teams are grouped tightly at the top of the Pac-12 standings. Oregon State sits atop the ladder at 14-4, while Oregon (16-5) trails by one game and UCLA and Arizona State have kept pace with matching 11-7 records.

Five teams enter the week ranked in the USA Today top 25, including Oregon State (5th), Oregon (6th), UCLA (11th), Arizona State (16th) and Stanford (25th).

Senior RHP Mark Appel, the league leader in strikeouts (93), ranks third in the Pac-12 with a 1.49 ERA and boasts a .197 opposing batting average. Cardinal pitchers have struck out 8.2 batters per nine innings, a figure that leads the conference and ranks 20th in the NCAA.

Stanford has lost three of four heading into this weekend's series at Arizona State. Stanford won 10 of 12 to begin the season, including a nine-game winning streak from Feb. 20-March 5.

Following the series with the Sun Devils, Stanford stays at home for its next five affairs, including next week's Pac-12 set with Oregon State.
