STANFORD, Calif. - Senior RHP Mark Appel was named to the 60-man midseason Golden Spikes Award watch list released Thursday by USA Baseball. The recognition comes a week after Appel was one of 10 players selected as a finalist for the Senior CLASS Award.
Appel ranks fifth nationally with 93 strikeouts this season and has tossed four complete games while compiling a 7-3 record.
A first team all-Pac-12 selection in 2012, Appel posted a 10-2 record and led the conference with 130 strikeouts en route to being named a Golden Spikes Award finalist and a Dick Howser Trophy semifinalist. Appel is one of six 2012 Golden Spikes Award semifinalists and two finalists on this season's list.
The Houston, Texas, native has been Stanford's Friday night starter for the last three seasons. As a junior, Appel was named the NCBWA Pitcher of the Year and garnered numerous All-America accolades from the NCBWA, Collegiate Baseball and Baseball America.
The watch list will continue to be a "rolling" list until May 28, when the 30 semifinalists for the award are announced.
The Golden Spikes Award trophy will be awarded live July 19 on MLB Network.
