STANFORD, Calif. - Stanford men's gymnast Gabriel Alvarado was named one of 58 athletes from the winter sports season to receive an NCAA postgraduate scholarship, as announced by the NCAA recently.
Alvarado is attending postgraduate courses at Stanford in the management science and engineering program with a concentration in organization, technology and entrepreneurship. He completed his undergraduate studies with a major in economics and fulfilled the requirements for pre-medical studies.
Alvarado plans on attending medical school and becoming a practicing physician - possibly focusing in sports medicine. He also hopes to pursue opportunities for innovation in the medical space, including the development of new medical devices or advancements in health technology. Alvarado would like to combine his training in entrepreneurship to the health field to better serve and treat patients.
To qualify for an NCAA postgraduate scholarship, student-athletes must excel academically and athletically, be in their final year of eligibility and plan to pursue graduate study. Student-athletes must also maintain at least a 3.2 grade-point average and be nominated by their institution's faculty athletics representative.
The NCAA Postgraduate Scholarships were created in 1964 to promote and encourage education by rewarding the NCAA's most accomplished student-athletes.
