STANFORD, Calif. - Senior Mark Appel has been named a semifinalist for the Golden Spikes Award, as announced Tuesday by USA Baseball. The award is presented annually to the nation's top amateur baseball player.
Appel finished his Stanford career as the program's all-time strikeout leader after fanning nine in the season finale last week against No. 8 UCLA. His 372 career strikeouts rank second among active NCAA hurlers.
The Pac-12 Baseball Scholar-Athlete of the Year is sixth in program history with 28 career wins and fourth with 377.2 innings pitch.
One of the most decorated players at the collegiate level, Appel went 10-4 during his senior campaign with a 2.12 ERA and 130 strikeouts in 106.1 frames. Through 14 appearances, the Friday night starter held opponents to a career-low .203 clip.
Appel is also a Senior CLASS Award finalist and part of the Diamond Sports Pitcher of the Year Watch List. He was twice this season named Louisville Slugger National Player of the Week and Pac-12 Pitcher of the Week.
The 2013 semifinalists include five players that were named Golden Spikes Award semifinalists in 2012, including Appel. Joining Appel as repeat semifinalists are Kris Bryant (San Diego), Marco Gonzales (Gonzaga), D.J. Peterson (New Mexico) and Nick Petree (Missouri State).
The Southeastern Conference leads 14 different leagues represented on the list with eight semifinalists, highlighted by three from LSU and three from Vanderbilt. The Atlantic Coast Conference is represented by four players and the Pac-12 earned three nominations.
