STANFORD, Calif. - For the second time this season, Stanford senior Mark Appel has been named Pac-12 Conference Pitcher of the Week, as announced Monday by the league.
The All-American from Houston, Texas, struck out 13 batters in 7.2 innings while leading Stanford to a 5-3 win at No. 8 Arizona State. Appel allowed two earned runs on five hits for his 22nd career outing with double-digit strikeouts. Appel issued one walk.
Appel struck out the side in the second, fifth and sixth innings, and fanned seven in a row midway through the contest en route to earning his eighth win of the season. Appel, the league leader in strikeouts (106), ranks fourth in the Pac-12 with a 1.56 ERA and boasts a .195 opposing batting average.
It was the fourth time in his career Appel has won the award.
