Nine Earn Academic Honors

STANFORD, Calif. – Led by senior libero Scott Sakaida, the Stanford men’s volleyball team produced nine Mountain Pacific Sports Federation All-Academic team members, the conference announced today.

The Cardinal paced all 13 MPSF schools in honorees this season. UC San Diego had eight players recognized, while BYU totaled six members.

Sakaida, a management science and engineering major, carries a cumulative GPA of 3.59 for the highest of Stanford’s All-Academic honorees. He is being recognized by the MPSF for the second straight year.

Senior Steven Irvin, a science, technology and society major with a 3.35 GPA, is being recognized by the MPSF for the third time in his career. Senior Brian Cook and redshirt juniors Grant Delgado and Daniel Tublin all earn their second career honors.

Junior Spencer Haly and sophomores Madison Hayden, Conrad Kaminski and James Shaw are all being recognized for the first time in their careers.

Players must be at least a sophomore academically, have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.00, and play in at least 50 percent of the team’s competition to make the All-Academic team. Junior Matt Aiello (3.87) won the NCAA Elite 89 Award for holding the highest GPA at the NCAA championship site, but was not eligible based on playing time for the MPSF honors.

Stanford produced one of the best seasons in school history in 2014. The Cardinal was the NCAA runner-up and finished with a 24-9 overall record and a No. 2 national ranking. After starting the season 6-7, Stanford went on a 13-match winning streak (the second-longest in program history) to reach the MPSF finals.
