Palmer Cup Nod for McNealy

STANFORD, Calif. – Sophomore Maverick McNealy was named to the Palmer Cup team for the United States, as announced Friday on the Golf Channel’s Morning Drive. The annual Ryder Cup-style competition will be played June 12-14 at Rich Harvest Farms near Sugar Grove, Illinois.

McNealy, who is also one of 10 semifinalists for the Ben Hogan Award, currently ranks No. 1 in Golfweek’s collegiate player rankings. He is also eighth in the World Amateur Golf Ranking. Along with four collegiate victories this season, McNealy has finished among the top 10 seven times in 10 outings.

With McNealy’s selection, Stanford has placed a player on the Palmer Cup team in seven consecutive seasons dating back to 2009.

McNealy headlined the six Americans selected by the Palmer Cup Ranking. He will be joined on the squad by Lee McCoy of Georgia, Vanderbilt’s Hunter Stewart, Alabama’s Robby Shelton, Florida State’s Jack Maguire and Beau Hossler of Texas. Baylor’s Kyle Jones, Georgia Tech’s Ollie Schniederjans and Carr Vernon of Cal State Monterey Bay were committee selections. Vernon was the designated non-Division I player. Anders Albertson of Georgia Tech was coach Bruce Heppler’s coach’s pick.

He was joined by his Arizona State teammate Max Rottluff (Germany), Rowin Caron of Florida State (Netherlands), East Tennessee State’s Adrian Meronk (Poland), Clement Sordet from Texas Tech (France) and Thomas Detry from Illinois (Belgium) from the ranking.

Committee selections were Gary Hurley of Maynooth (Ireland) and Vanderbilt’s Matthias Schwab (Austria). Mathias Eggenberger of Stirling (Liechtenstein) qualified for Team Europe by winning The Royal & Ancient Foundation Scholars Tournament. Pep Angles of Central Arkansas (Spain) was Jean Van de Velde’s coach’s pick.
