Modi Earns National Honor

STANFORD, Calif. – Stanford’s Akash Modi was named the College Gymnastics Association Gymnast of the Week for the sixth time this year, as announced by the organization this week.

Modi claimed the NCAA all-around title and accumulated five All-America honors this past weekend at the NCAA Championships.

Modi became the first Stanford gymnast since Jon Louis in 1986 to win the NCAA title in the all-around. Modi tallied a season-high 90.450 to claim top marks in the competition. He is the first Cardinal gymnast to claim an NCAA individual title since 2012 when Eddie Penev earned victories on floor and vault.

Modi led the team with five All-America honors, earning national recognition in the all-around (1st, 90.450), floor (T-8th, 15.350), pommel horse (3rd, 14.750), parallel bars (2nd, 15.100) and high bar (2nd, 15.100). His five honors is the most of any Cardinal gymnast since Dan Gill earned five awards in 2004.

Modi earned three awards in 2014 and is now an eight-time All-American.

Modi was named the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Gymnast of the Year for the second consecutive season, as announced at the conference championships earlier this year.

Modi has earned 23 individual event victories against NCAA teams this season: parallel bars (7), all-around (6), floor (4), pommel horse (3), rings (2) and high bar (1).

Modi led the nation with six College Gymnastics Association Gymnast of the Week honors and paced the MPSF with four Gymnast of the Week awards. He finished the regular season ranked first in the nation in the all-around (89.683) and parallel bars (15.533).

The Cardinal was well-represented in All-America honors during the weekend with five Stanford gymnasts combining for 10 awards. It is the most All-America honors at a single NCAA Championships since 2011 when the team produced 11.
