STANFORD, Calif. - Head men’s volleyball coach John Kosty has announced the signing of two additional prep standouts to National Letters of Intent. Russell Dervay (Virginia Beach, Va.) and Chris Moore (Lake Mary, Fla.) will join the Cardinal class of 2015, which also includes Jordan Ewert (Antioch, Calif.), Matt Klassen (Milwaukee, Wis.) and Ryan Smith (Clovis, Calif.).
“We are excited to have both Russell and Chris join our volleyball family,” said Kosty, who just completed his ninth season at the helm of the program. “Their signings cap off a truly great 2015 recruiting campaign for Stanford men’s volleyball. We feel that we have added two wonderful young men that will represent our university and our program in the finest manner possible.”
Dervay comes to The Farm from Frank W Cox High School in Virginia Beach, Virginia. A two-time state champion (2012 & 2014), Dervay, who is a 6-1 setter, captained his high school team as a junior and senior. A first team all-state selection in 2014, he was selected to the 2014 USA Volleyball High Performance Holiday Camp.
“Russell is a volleyball guy,” noted Kosty. “He understands the game at a high level and is extremely consistent as a setter. We value his ability to put the ball in the right spot at the right time and his feel for running an offense.”
Dervay was a member of Coastal Volleyball Club in Virginia Beach. His 15 Open team took home a silver medal at the U.S. Junior National Championships, in which he was named all-tournament. His 16 Open team collected a bronze medal, while his 17 Open squad placed fifth at the championships.
Moore, a 6-5 middle blocker out of Lake Mary High School in Lake Mary, Florida, is a four-year varsity starter and team captain in 2015. A two-time AAU All-American (2011 & 2013), Moore was a member of Ocean Bay Volleyball Club. He also competed for Team Florida in 2013 and 2014, winning bronze medals at the USA Volleyball High Performance Championship.
“What Chris brings is dynamic athleticism and relentless play at the net,” explained Kosty. “He is a big part of the success of his Ocean Bay club team and wins on a constant basis. I think the best is yet to come with Chris.
“With Russell and Chris joining our three early signees, we have been able to address many of the needs that we have going into the 2016 season,” added Kosty. “This was a very important class for the future of Stanford men’s volleyball and should pay dividends in the short and long term. Furthermore, these young men will add to our tradition of outstanding citizenship in the community.”
