Time for the Big Row

STANFORD, Calif. – The top-ranked Stanford lightweight rowing team will square off against the No. 2 Cal openweight squad in the 82nd edition of the Big Row on Saturday.

The Cardinal varsity eight will race against the 3V8 for the Golden Bears at 9:40 a.m. right after the Stanford 2V8 goes up against the Cal 4V8 at 9:30 a.m.

Last season when the two schools faced each other in the Big Row Stanford came out on top in both races. The varsity eight won by nearly 17 seconds and the 2V8 finished in first by 16 seconds.

Cal’s head coach is former Stanford head coach Al Acosta. The first-year head coach for the Golden Bears led the Cardinal lightweight program to four IRA National Championships in the last five years.

New head coach Derek Byrnes has Stanford firing on all cylinders. Last weekend the team captured three trophies at the WIRA Championships. The varsity eight is undefeated in seven races this spring and has the team atop the polls for the fifth straight week.
