Your Guide to the Payton Jordan

STANFORD, Calif. – When Angell Field was built sometime around the turn of the 20th century, it was among the gems of the track world. So many world and American records were set there that stone monuments were built to commemorate its rich history.

When Stanford built its first all-weather track surface inside Stanford Stadium in the 1960s, Angell Field fell into disrepair. The greatest racing at Angell Field may have been the automobile drag races between Stanford football stars John Elway and Ken Margerum, who lived in what is now the Stanford Visitor Center at the corner of the track, in the early 1980s.

Since then, Cobb Track and Angell Field has regained its glory, and the Payton Jordan Cardinal Invitational, in its 20th year, has become the destination for fast distance-running, particularly in the 5,000 and 10,000 meters. Twice, the U.S. 10,000 record has been broken at the Payton Jordan, first by Meb Keflezighi (27:13.98) in 2001 and then by Chris Solinsky (26:59.60) in 2010. Numerous other national records have fallen as well.

Here is a rundown of what this year’s edition has to offer, with a summary of the top distance races, by race time. Keep in mind that sections, even as of late Friday afternoon, are subject to change. Qualifying standards for the 2015 IAAF World Championships in Beijing are in parentheses.
