STANFORD, Calif. – Six seniors on the Stanford women’s rowing team looked back on their time at Stanford before heading to the NCAA Championships in Gold River, Calif. next week.
The senior class is made up of Courtney Carrabino, Alix Chrumka, Naomi Cornman, Nicole Gilmore, Amanda Lorei and Nancy Miles.
During the time these six individuals have been on The Farm, they have helped Stanford women’s rowing to several accomplishments. They were integral in the Cardinal winning its first Pac-12 Championship in school history last season, picking up titles in the varsity eight, 2V8 and varsity four. That same group went on to podium at the NCAA Championships with a fourth place team finish. This year at the Pac-12 Championships the varsity eight earned a silver medal.
Carrabino (New Canaan, Conn.) is majoring in international relations. After graduation she plans to work over the summer before studying abroad in Italy during the Fall. She has been a member of the 2V8 all season after helping the 2V8 finish fourth at the NCAA’s and Pac-12 title last year.
Chrumka (Grosse Pointe, Mich.) is a biology major. She plans to concentrate on just rowing for a year after graduation before going to medical school. She has done over 200 hours of shadowing surgeons in neurosurgery, orthopedic surgery and plastic surgery. She moved up to the varsity eight this year after helping the varsity four obtain its highest finish in school history at the NCAA’s with second place last year.
Cornman (Tiburon, Calif.) is majoring in both international relations and French. She is the 2015 Pac-12 Scholar Athlete of the Year and will be back on Stanford’s campus next year pursing an M.A. in media studies, communication with a focus in virtual reality. She has worked in the Virtual Human Interaction Lab doing a study on immaterial presence as well as doing research with Oculus Rift goggles. She has been the coxswain of the varsity eight all season and has the boat seeded third at the NCAA’s after earning a silver medal at Pac-12’s.
Gilmore (Alameda, Calif.) is a biology major who has worked extremely hard as a walk-on the last four years. She strives to be a veterinarian and is in the process of applying for vet schools. She will try to work in an internship this next year. She has raced in the 2V4 and 3V8 this season.
Lorei (Wynnewood, Pa.) is majoring in English. She will return to Stanford for next year to pursue a master’s degree. She is interested in Russian literature and Russian studies and spent last summer studying in Moscow. A member of the 2V8, she helped lead that same boat to a fourth place finish at NCAA’s and a Pac-12 title last year.
Miles (Bainbridge Island, Wash.) is a human biology major. She will be continuing her education at Mills College in Oakland next year as part of the pre-medical postbac program. She has been involved all year with Cardinal RHED, an ASSU executive cabinet on Athletic Mental Health and did an internship her junior year with the Department of Health and Human Services in Washington, D.C. She is in the varsity eight for the third straight year and has a Pac-12 title on her resume.
The six seniors will have one more regatta to attend as part of Stanford University as they will compete at the NCAA Championships May 29-31 at Lake Natoma in Gold River, Calif.
