AUSTIN, Texas – Dylan Duvio’s performance in the men’s pole vault was an early Stanford highlight and the women’s 1,600-meter relay provided an ideal finish at the NCAA West Track and Field Prelims on Saturday.

Nine Cardinal qualified on the third and final day of the meet, and 13 will advance in all to the NCAA Championships in Eugene, Oregon, on June 10-13. Those numbers include members of the Cardinal relay team, which advanced on time (3:35.15).

Duvio, a sophomore, cleared 17-6 ½ on his third try. The competition ended at that height with 10 over the bar. Duvio was clean until then and would have advanced even with a miss.

Stanford will send four to Eugene in the 5,000 meters – two men and two women.

Jessica Tonn, the national leader, cruised to second in her heat of the women’s race, running 16:04.31. She also led sophomore Vanessa Fraser into her first national meet. Fraser was fifth in the heat in 16:04.85 to secure a berth on place.

In the men’s 5,000, Sean McGorty (13:53.10) and Erik Olson (13:53.37). Jack Keelan (14:06.60) had the ninth-fastest time of the day, but the two non-automatic times were ahead of him in his heat, leaving him empty-handed.

Another redshirt freshman advanced – Victoria Smith in the women’s javelin. The Canadian placed 10th.

True freshman Elise Cranny secured a spot in the women’s 1,500, placing fifth to earn the final qualifying spot in her heat. She ran 4:19.38.

Of Stanford’s 13 NCAA qualifiers, six are in their first seasons of eligibility.
