Manuel Wins at Santa Clara

SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- Simone Manuel led a number of Stanford swimmers at last weekend’s Arena Pro Swim Series at Santa Clara, claiming the 50-meter freestyle. Manuel was to the wall in 24.75, four hundredths ahead of Dutch Olympian Femke Heemskerk.

The time was good for 11th-best in the world and marked Manuel’s third-fastest time ever. She was a 24.56 at last summer’s nationals.

Manuel also finished eighth in the 200-meter freestyle (1:59.82), eighth in the 50-meter butterfly (27.39) and second in the 100-meter freestyle (54.29) at the meet that featured many Olympians.

Rising junior Lia Neal qualified for three A finals. She finished eighth in the 50-meter freestyle (25.35), ninth in the 50-meter butterfly (27.45) and fifth in the 100-meter freestyle (55.15).
