Dylan Sorensen, a two-time steeplechase All-American and professional triathlete, is an assistant coach for men's distance runners and completed his first full season in 2018 with Sean McGorty's NCAA outdoor 5,000 title.
Since Sorensen arrived, Stanford men's distance runners have earned four NCAA top-four finishes on the track and a second place by the 2019 distance medley relay team indoors.
Grant Fisher was second indoors in the 3,000 in 2019, and fourth in 2018. Steven Fahy was third in the 3,000 steeplechase outdoors in 2018 and Fisher was third behind McGorty in the 5,000 the same year. Fahy and Jack Keelan (10,000) also captured Pac-12 10,000-meter titles.
In cross country, Stanford has won consecutive Pac-12 championships during Sorensen's two seasons and Fisher captured individual titles each time. As a team, the Cardinal was fourth in 2017 and fifth in 2018 at the NCAA Cross Country Championships.
Four Stanford runners -- Fisher, Fahy, Alex Ostberg, and Alek Parsons -- have earned cross country All-America honors since 2017. Fisher was the NCAA runner-up in 2018.
Sorensen also coached Connor Lane to the U.S. junior cross country title in February 2018. Lane went on to win the Pan Am and NACAC Under-20 championships as well.
The Stanford men placed nine on the Pac-12 All-Academic cross country team in 2018 and 11 in 2017. Fisher was the 2018 Pac-12 Men's Cross Country Scholar-Athlete of the Year. Tai Dinger was named second-team CoSIDA Academic All-American in 2017.
Before coming to Stanford, Sorensen competed internationally in the triathlon while serving as an executive with Major League Triathlon, a pro-team organization.
Sorensen and Chris Miltenberg, Stanford's Franklin P. Johnson Director of Track and Field, both ran at Georgetown for longtime coach Pat Henner -- Miltenberg graduated in 2003, and Sorensen graduated in 2013 and ran an additional season while earning his master's in sports industry management.
Sorensen, a native of Zionsville, Indiana, was the 2014 Big East Conference champion in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, and captured the ECAC/IC4A title in that event. His best time was 8:47.07.
After college, Sorensen was recruited by USA Triathlon to its Olympic Development Team with an eye toward the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo. In addition to competing, Sorensen served as the marketing manager and pro athlete liaison with Major League Triathlon, a second-year league. In addition, Sorensen served as a volunteer assistant triathlon coach at Queen's University in Charlotte, which has a fully-funded varsity triathlon program.
