  • The 8,037 total does not count as a Stanford record (which is 7,806) because, under junior rules, a lighter discus and shot and lower high hurdles were used than in collegiate competition.

  • Fourth in the decathlon at the NCAA outdoor championships, breaking his own school record with 7,806 points.

  • Repeated as U.S. junior champion by scoring 8,001 points at the U.S. Junior Championships.
  • The total (using junior-level implements and high-hurdle height) was 17 points off the American junior record and placed him No. 3 all-time on the U.S. junior list.
  • In his collegiate outdoor debut, scored 7,518 points to place second overall and first among collegians, at the Texas Relays.
  • Total of 7,518 placed him third all-time at Stanford and came within 74 points of Bob Mathias' 1952 school-record of 7,592c.
