Eric Stein came to Stanford in 2005 from Princeton in a newly created position as the senior associate director of athletics for physical education, recreation and wellness. In this role, he has developed and oversees the Recreation and Wellness Programs that are comprised of five divisions including Recreation, Wellness, Health and Human Performance, Business Operations and Recreation Facilities.
Stein played a leadership role in developing the BeWell@Stanford program and Co-Directs the program today, as this is the university's wellness initiative whose mission is to create a healthier Stanford by developing a culture of wellness and is the largest collegiate wellness program in the country with over 11,000 participants yearly. Also,
Stein is the Co-Director of the Healthy Campus 2020 Program, which is the student Wellness initiative for the University.
Stein served as the sport administrator for men's and women's golf, men's and women's fencing and women's squash programs for his first 11 years at Stanford but now focuses his full attention on the Recreation and Wellness needs of all the 29,000 students, faculty and staff at Stanford.
Stein came to The Farm from Princeton, where he served as the associate athletic director for physical education and campus recreation for 23 years. He was responsible for all non-varsity athletics at Princeton, which included physical education, intramural sports, club sports, informal recreation and recreational facility usage. He was connected to the varsity golf programs for 17 years and served as the men's head coach from 1988-95, while also starting the women's program and serving as head coach form 1991-05. His teams won nine Ivy League titles and advanced to nine NCAA championships.
Stein was the youngest President in the 67-year history of the National Intramural Recreational Sports Association and is currently the President of the NIRSA Foundation Board. Stein is also past chairman of the NCAA District II Men's Golf Committee and was a member of the NCAA Women's Mid-East/Atlantic District Committee.
Before his time at Princeton, Stein served as the director of intramural and recreational sports at the South Carolina, and was campus recreation director at Wisconsin-Milwaukee and the College of Lake County.
Stein received his bachelor's degree in physical education from Evansville and his master's degree in physical education from Illinois.
Stein and his wife, Robyn, live in Mountain View with their daughter, Elyssa, and have two older sons, Ryan and Matt.
